About Us:

The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate (OCYA) is an Office of the Legislature.

Our Office provides advocacy for children and youth receiving or seeking to receive services under the _Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act_ and the _Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act_, and youth involved with the youth justice system.

The OCYA is also responsible for providing legal representation for young people in matters related to the _Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act_ and the _Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act_.

The OCYA conducts investigations and reports on issues arising from the serious injury to or death of a young person.

The OCYA engages stakeholders in understanding the importance of respecting young people's individual and collective rights, interests, and viewpoints, as well as delivers public education.

The impact of colonialism continues to adversely affect Indigenous young people, their families, and their communities.

Intergenerational trauma, systemic racism, and the legacy of residential schools are experienced by many Indigenous young people, who continue to be overrepresented in the child intervention system.

Role:


Working within the parameters of the _Child and Youth Advocate Act,_ the Engagement and Education Consultant strives to engage the public and community partners in understanding advocacy and the importance of respecting a young person's rights, interests, and viewpoints; and to inform and develop positive relationships with youth, and community partners.

This position performs all work in accordance with relevant legislation and particularly for those receiving designated services under the _Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act_, the _Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act_ and the _Youth Criminal Justice Act_.


The Engagement and Education Consultant engages and educates children, youth, and community partners across the province, specifically those young people receiving designated services under the _Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act_, the _Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act_ and the _Youth Criminal Justice Act_.


Supporting OCYA's core business the Engagement and Education Consultant provides public education about the role of the OCYA, on the rights of children and youth, and facilitates information and training sessions on advocacy at a regional and provincial level.

This position also engages community partners in understanding the importance of respecting young people's rights, interests, and viewpoints.


The Engagement and Education Consultant will develop products and services within the context of the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate's mission, values, and strategic initiatives.

This position will liaise with staff in the Ministries of Children and Family Services, Justice, Public Safety and Emergency Services, and Seniors Community and Social Services to ensure education and information tools are in place for staff working with children and youth.


Qualifications:


To be successful in this role, you must be passionate about advocacy and display an understanding of the interests, challenges and unique needs of children and youth who receiving designated services under the _Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act_, the _Protection of Sexually Exploited Children Act_ and the _Youth Criminal Justice Act_.

You must understand related legislation, child rights, and the rights of Indigenous peoples.

You need to be able to use your knowledge to form connections with community partners through out the province, developing and delivering varies forms of public engagement.


A University degree in a related field plus 4 years of related experience in areas such as community and youth engagement, facilitation, development/delivery of public education presentations, project coordination, services for vulnerable youth, youth justice, or child and family services.


Given the overrepresentation of Indigenous young people in the child intervention and youth justice systems, preference will be given to individuals who self-identify and are known to others as Indigenous or who have had extensive experience working with Indigenous peoples and communities.
