Grand Challenges Canada (GCC) is seeking an
Associate Communications Officer, Humanitarian Innovation to play a critical role in supporting the implementation and coordination of the communications strategy for the Humanitarian Grand Challenge Program.

This role is key in helping the organization promote and support our initiatives and assist us in sharing our story and the great work of our innovation partners through creative communications and storytelling.

Agency for International Development, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), The Netherlands Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Global Affairs Canada, and Grand Challenges Canada.

Together, we seek life-saving or life-improving innovations to help the most vulnerable and hardest-to-reach people impacted by humanitarian crises caused by conflict.


The Associate Communications Officer, Humanitarian Innovation, is responsible for the implementation of and management of the humanitarian communications strategies, to effectively raise awareness and engage key players, including donors, innovators and stakeholders, elevating the profile of the Humanitarian Grand Challenge.

This role works in close collaboration with the Humanitarian Innovation team, funders other partners, and GCC's Corporate Communication team to enable effective and efficient communications.


We are looking for an Associate Communications Officer who will support the development of strategic humanitarian communications strategies, lead on the execution of such strategies, and manage brand messaging and promotion.

Social media experience, strategic communications experience and outreach experience are required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the implementation of the Humanitarian Grand Challenge's Communications strategy
  • Implement a social media editorial calendar, create a regular posting schedule, manage content, and monitor campaign engagement.
  • Draft, design, and publish quarterly newsletters
  • Support brand communications and program storytelling activities (E.g. writing stories, filming or scripting videos)
  • Ensure the website (WordPress) is frequently refreshed and compliant to AODA guidelines, including ensuring links and content are accurate and timely and keeping both the website and other social media platforms up to date. Manage third party web support. Major website changes is outsourced
  • Secure press and media coverage, build and maintain relationships with relevant media
  • Compile and analyze communications and outreach metrics (including Google Analytics)
  • Draft speeches, talking points, press releases, fact sheets, web copy, blogs, and articles
  • Lead the development of the Humanitarian Grand Challenge communications strategy and plan, in close collaboration with Director, Humanitarian Innovation and GCC's Corporate Senior Communications Manager
  • Offer support and communication advice to management, staff and supported innovators
  • Manage events, identify event and outreach opportunities, conduct outreach to ensure HGC participation
  • Hire and manage communications specialists such as regional communication contractors, video production, photographers
  • Create graphics and other informative materials
  • Ensure all public facing documents and platforms are professional and consistent with current HGC branding.
  • Assist the Director and other members of the team in writing Op-Eds, articles and other publications as necessary.
  • Perform other jobrelated duties as required

Qualifications

  • Relevant education preferably in Communications, Arts, Science, Business, Media or recognized equivalent
  • Minimum three (3) years' experience working in communications, public relations, and/or other relevant field
  • Experience with social media management (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, Hootsuite)
