This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).


In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our Benefits Overview page and annual salary range of $59,822 to $82,266.

This position has an initial appointment that ends on June 30, 2025, with the possibility of an extension.

Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

Working for the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program


The Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) is both an online and on-campus collaborative cohort program foregrounding Indigenous values and methods of teaching, learning, and knowing.

This program works towards developing a greater understanding of Aboriginal culture and perspectives on teaching and learning, primarily in schools where Aboriginal children are learning.

Our goal is to improve the educational experiences of Aboriginal children by increasing the number of Aboriginal teachers in communities all over Alberta.


Position


The kiskinwahamakew ATEP Academic Learning Facilitator works collaboratively as a member of the kiskinwahamakewak team and the larger ATEP support team.

Reporting to the Director of ATEP, the kisinwahamakew works to recruit applicants into the program and then works directly with ATEP students to facilitate students' academic performance and success as pre-service teachers.

The kiskinwahamakew ATEP Academic Learning Facilitator also provides guidance and referrals, as necessary, to appropriate mental health and wellness supports.

The role of the kiskinwahamakew ATEP Academic Learning Facilitator is to develop strong trust relationships among ATEP staff and students, maintaining regular contact and providing a safe space for ATEP's students.

The majority of the students in the program are Aboriginal students who come from a variety of backgrounds and with varied levels of preparedness.

The kiskinwahamakew ATEP Academic Learning Facilitator is able to assess and differentiate individual ATEP student needs, develop strategies to support effective learning and achievement, and monitor overall outcomes.


Duties

  • Facilitate opportunities to integrate Aboriginal perspectives and cultures throughout the program, liaising with students, staff, and faculty to build awareness and understanding of Aboriginal cultures and ways of being.
  • Provide formal and informal support (academic and cultural) and encouragement to students on campus and online through frequent, regular contact in multiple formats, including eClass communications, newsletters, office hours, coffee chats, etc.
  • Identify and develop learning and growth opportunities to ensure successful program completion, providing referrals where appropriate.
  • Forecast, plan, and schedule special events appropriate to learning stages, to both allow for the acquisition of cultural and professional competencies and foster appreciation and belonging.
  • Lead collaborative efforts among ATEP staff to promote the program and recruit students.
  • Maintain awareness of students' progress to support program completion.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Education or higher
  • Professional teacher certification by an authorizing body
  • K12 teaching experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of the role of a professional K12 educator and the Teaching Quality Standard
  • Lived experience and a solid understanding of Aboriginal perspectives, cultures, and values
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal protocol, knowledge systems, and practices
  • Understanding of Aboriginal communities
  • Knowledge of ATEP and University of Alberta policies and programming is an asset
