We are currently looking to hire an Operations Manager - North for the Meat & Dairy Inspection Section of the Food Safety Branch.


As the Operations Manager - North, you will be responsible for leading and managing approximately 25 regulatory staff and overseeing inspection service for provincially licensed abattoirs, mobile butcher processing facilities, and dairies located in the geographical areas of Edmonton, Grande Prairie and La Crete.

This position is part of the Meat and Dairy Inspection Section's senior management team, which takes a lead role in shaping the direction and vision of the section and the delivery of regulatory inspection service in accordance with the legislation.

You will be responsible to address complex regulatory issues and mediate conflicts as they arise.

You will manage the completion of timely and effective analysis and advice on legislative and regulatory matters, and provide leadership, advice, and assistance in planning, coordinating and administering activities and projects in support of the Meat and Dairy Inspection Section's legislated responsibilities and the mandate and outcomes of AGI.


To be successful, you will have an excellent understanding of regulatory inspection systems, meat slaughter, meat processing, risk assessment and compliance/enforcement principles.

You will have demonstrated significant leadership in various roles and have significant prior job experience in direct staff supervision, including responsibilities for staff development and staff performance evaluation.


Your effective communication skills and strong conflict resolution, facilitation, and networking skills, along with experience managing projects will allow you to be successful in this role.

A working knowledge of the _Meat Inspection Act and Regulations_, the _Dairy Industry Act and Regulations _and related legislation and regulations, as well as related Government of Alberta policy, is desirable.

Qualifications:

  • University graduation in a related field, preferably in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Food Safety or Food Science
  • Plus, six (6) years related experience.
Equivalencies maybe considered - directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

Assets to be successful in the role:

  • Knowledge and experience in the meat and/or dairy industry.
  • Technical knowledge in inspection processes, slaughter, animal welfare, and meat processing.
  • Knowledge of food safety principles for food processing, meat slaughter, and meat and dairy processing.
  • Familiarity with applicable legislation, regulations, and guidelines including the ability to interpret regulatory standards (e.g., Meat Inspection Act (AB), Meat Inspection Regulation (AB), Livestock Identification and Commerce Act, Meat Facility Standards, etc.).
  • Robust competencies in communication and conflict resolution (e.g. Verbal Judo).
  • Strategic thinking and planning competencies with the ability to translate into operational plans.
  • Training and/or experience in Incident Command Systems and emergency response.
