Environmental Health Services Branch of the Energy & Environment Department is in search of two highly skilled and energetic individuals for the temporary (up to 17 weeks) positions of

Environmental Outreach Ambassador (Co-op Student). Environmental Health Services is responsible for solid waste and recycling education and outreach, as well as the strategic implementation of the Community Climate Action Plan and Corporate Energy and Emissions Plan.

Under the general direction of the Sustainability Coordinator, the

Environmental Outreach Ambassador Co-op Students will perform an audit of the City's waste and recycling program and educate residents on water conservation practices. Auditing of waste materials is largely conducted on e-bikes (weather permitting).


Environmental Outreach Ambassadors will primarily work Tuesday to Saturday, with some evenings as required to operate the Bike Valet at community events.


Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Implement actions in the Contamination Remediation Plan.
  • Auditing curbside and multifamily recyclable materials.
  • Auditing curbside yard waste program.
  • Auditing mixed food and yard waste for neighboring municipalities.
  • Engaging with residents on proper recycling practices and water conservation practices throughout the community at both inperson and online events.
  • Develop engaging communication and outreach materials on the topics of recycling and water conservation.
  • Operate the weekly Bike Valet at the Farmer's Market and other major community events.
  • Participate in the biweekly Drought Response Team meetings.
  • Deliver annual solid waste calendars to select streets.

Required Knowledge, Abilities & Skills

  • Knowledge of local best practices related to residential recycling, waste diversion and water conservation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage the public and speak in front of a range of audiences.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Social media content creation.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, in particular data collection, entry and analysis into Microsoft Excel.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and may require long periods of walking and ebike riding.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices related to waste audits and working outdoors in hot conditions.

Education, Training & Experience

  • Post-Secondary education with a focus in water conservation, waste management, environmental studies, environmental science, marketing and communications or related fields.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License; Class N is acceptable.
