Our Story


The Land Canadian Adventures(TLCA) is a multi award-winning business in North Kawartha, Ontario, and we specialise in four-season outdoor experiential programs in Ontario and BC's most beautiful locations.

TLCA works with private schools and post-secondary institutions to plan and deliver unforgettable outdoor programming for their international students.

Since 2012, we've organised accessible land-based and backcountry programs for thousands of visitors and newcomers across Ontario.


We've also delivered hybrid and fully remote outdoor training and education programs for corporations, community groups and students around the globe leveraging a variety of interactive online platforms designed to help our partners achieve their education and training objectives through exploration of their own "neighbourwoods".

We are growing, and need to build our team of enthusiastic language instructors and outdoor educators: people who have found themselves facilitating the most meaningful learning experiences for their students and themselves well beyond the walls of a traditional classroom.


Co-creating an engaging space for these students is priority number one, as we believe whole-heartedly that language learners acquire and refine their communication skills and develop their confidence best when they find themselves in real-life settings that demand it - coordinating with a paddling partner, setting up a tent or tarp with their group or navigating to a campsite on a new lake.


Our
Learning English Outdoors program is an Ontario high school credit course for non-native English speakers (ESLCO 110 hours) leveraging the power of experiential learning in the great outdoors.

Our content is all inspired by our surroundings here in the Land Between
- the ecotone that exists where the Great Canadian Shield blends into the Saint Lawrence Lowlands.


The students are between the ages of 14 and 16 and their language skills are usually between a B1-C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

These students have a huge variety of outdoor adventure experience-for many, this will be their first time swimming in a lake or spending a night in a tent With this in mind, the intensity and duration of their outdoor experiences grow with each week of the in-person program.


Flow of A Typical Day On Campus

8:30-8:50:Students meet outside for a morning gathering session

8:50-12:30:_
Language Lessons_


Either making use of indoor classroom space and facilities (smartboards, computers etc.) or outside in one of the many beautiful shaded spaces on the main campus.


Each day's language lessons are rooted in a content piece (video, listening, reading etc.) that is thematically linked to the natural and/or cultural heritage of the Land Between and the principles of safe and swift wilderness travel.

The vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar of the lesson is drawn from this content piece, moving from controlled to freer practice.

Outdoor Skills Workshop Sessions_

The language and outdoor skills objectives necessarily involve developing individual confidence and teamwork skills. Our team of wilderness guides join each afternoon to lead the students
- depending on the nature of the activity of the day, 2-4 guides will join the group.

Graded Wilderness Skills Expeditions


As an introduction to the world of backcountry canoe camping, each week builds on the last, in terms of the duration and intensity of our outdoor excursions.

e.g.

Week 1

Overnighter on campus

Week 2

2 nights introductory canoe camping experience (e.g.camping at Lakefield College's Northcote location
- approximately 4km paddle upriver from the main campus

Week 3

2 night backcountry canoe camping trip in the Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park

Week 4

4 day, 3-night backcountry canoe camping trip in the Haliburton Highlands Water Trail network.


This position is varied and flexible, as the delivery of the program will depend heavily on current provincial public health guidelines - this means that facilitators will need to be ready and willing to deliver both in-person or virtual lessons while maintaining the quality of the material.


Overall Objectives and Expectations

English Language Instructor:

  • Teaching of ESLCO Ontario curriculum, adhering to all Ministry expectations, to students enrolled in
    Learning English Outdoors, high school credit course, including report card writing (2 reports), and awarding a final grade for each student,
