Student Project Assistant

The Collection Services department of McGill Library is looking for five, undergraduate student part-time temporary employees for a period of approximately 15 weeks to perform duties related to the following project:
Barcoding Print Materials Preparation Project


Under the direction of the Coordinator, E-Resources and Serials, students will perform work on a Library project to verify, barcode and/or reproduce existing barcodes on journal volumes and books originating from the McGill Library's storage locations.

The work will be undertaken in one or more locations of the Redpath Library and McLennan Library buildings, and 550 Sherbrooke office.

Student Project Assistants will be asked to perform a range of duties including, but not limited to:

  • Move and shelve library materials.
  • Scan library print volumes, add and reproduce barcodes on items.
  • Inventory the collection and process library items.
  • Provide access to library records, i.e., create and edit item records, and link barcodes in the Discovery catalogue when required.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Currently registered McGill Student.
  • English, excellent spoken and written skills required. French reading comprehension skills strongly desired. McGill University is an Englishlanguage university where daytoday duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level # (3) on a scale of 04 Other languages an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office365 suite, including Word and Excel.
  • Familiarity with library collections, including accessing databases, ebooks and ejournals.
  • Attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  • Must be clientfocused and customerservice oriented.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to multitask.
  • Demonstrated ability to cope with the physical requirements of the position: handling bound volumes and dusty materials.
  • Ability to assess information from different places and compile it in a succinct manner.
  • Work experience in an academic library an asset.
  • Start and end date: September 5 to December 19, weeks duration, for approximately 912 hours per week).
  • Hours can be worked during the hours of 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
  • Houry Rate :$ 15.35
