Position Description

The McGill University Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time Contract Academic Staff position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical) based at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate's qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be appointed to clinical practice in the Department of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), which includes the Lachine Hospital, Montreal General Hospital and Royal Victoria Hospital.

We are seeking a full-time gastroenterologist as a Clinician-Teacher or a Clinician-Investigator to fill a need in the field of Neurogastroenterology.

As a Clinician-Teacher, the successful candidate's major non-clinical focus will be on teaching the next generation of physicians. Teaching activity will include both didactic and clinical teaching.

As a Clinician-Investigator, the successful candidate will focus on directing a research program of sufficient caliber to publish in peer-reviewed journals and obtain funding from peer-reviewed agencies. The candidate interested in a Clinician-Investigator position will be expected to devote between 25-50% of their time to research.

The Clinician-Teacher/Investigator will work at the three MUHC sites. Adding to our esophageal diseases program, the successful candidate will be a dynamic individual who will lead and establish the foundation of a Neurogastroenterology clinical program with a particular emphasis on the diagnosis and treatment of gastric, and colonic/ano-rectal motor dysfunctions, as well as functional bowel diseases.

In addition, the successful candidate will serve within our existing esophageal motility laboratory, performing and interpreting examinations at an expert level, and contributing to the development of ano-rectal motor disorder investigations (i.e., ano-rectal manometry, etc.). Duties will also include inpatient gastroenterology consultation service, on-call, as well as outpatient clinic.

The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill's academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, supervision of graduate students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education requirements

Candidates must:

Hold an MD degree and must holds, or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Quebec; Have completed subspecialty training in Gastroenterology; Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent); Be certified by the Collège des Médecins du Québec; Have completed a dedicated clinical or research fellowship in neuro-gastroenterology of at least one year, including additional specific training in anorectal and esophageal motility; Have clinical experience in endoscopy and ability to endoscopically manage acute GI emergencies such as gastrointestinal bleeding; Applicants should have a strong and demonstrable interest in patient care, teaching, research, and innovation; Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals.
