The L.R. Wilson Heritage Research Archives, at the Port Colborne Historical and Marine Museum, is dedicated to preserving and sharing the documentary history of Port Colborne and local marine heritage. We offer a range of services to researchers and the public, including a research facility, local history presentations, and walking tours. We are looking for two students to join our team this summer as Digitization Assistants to assist with the digitization of photographic and documentary materials to improve the accessibility of our collection.

The ideal candidate is enrolled in university-level History, Public History, Archival / Information Sciences, Museum Studies or a related program and will have a keen interest in local history, public history, and the history of Indigenous and minority groups. You will be highly-organized, motivated, and able to work independently while maintaining consistent standards. Strong communication and analytical skills are required. Proficiency with Microsoft 365 is required. While training will be provided, experience with scanners, digitization or photographic applications such as Photoshop is considered an asset. Previous experience working or volunteering at an archives, library, or museum is an asset. Candidates must be willing to undertake necessary training in archival procedures and best practices for this project.

This is a seasonal summer position for 16 weeks, 35 hours a week with a rate of pay of $17.50 per hour. Anticipated start date is May 13, 2024.

Funding for this position is received by Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations and the successful candidate must register with Young Canada Works and meet their requirements and the following eligibility:

  • are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada
  • are legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • are between 18 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
  • have been a full-time high school, college, CEGEP or university student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW work assignment; and
  • intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW work assignment.
