Our client is searching for an Assistant Controller to join their Accounting and Finance team. This role will be responsible for the accounting and analysis for the company, including balance sheet accounts, corporate and store income statements, and full cycle accounting. A successful candidate will have experience preparing financial statements and reports for management. This role reports directly to the Controller.

Your Success Will Be Defined By Your Ability To

  • Prepare, analyze, and review financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and account reconciliations, ensuring compliance with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Oversee the month end and year end closing processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation. Ensuring timely and accurate completion of financial reporting activities
  • Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy, proper documentation, and compliance with internal controls. Investigating and resolving discrepancies or variances as necessary
  • Coordinate the year-end preparation of financial statements and working papers for external efficiency
  • Identify opportunities to streamline financial processes, enhancing internal controls and optimizing efficiency
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to other accounting personnel
  • Conduct financial analysis, including variance analysis, profitability analysis, and cost analysis, to support strategic decision making and identify areas for improvement
  • Prepare and review federal and provincial sales tax returns
  • Correspond with operational personnel to resolve issues as necessary
  • Other related duties as required

Your strengths include:

  • University Degree in Business or Accounting, with a CPA designation is preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in a full cycle accounting role
  • Proficient at problem solving and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities including experience with supervising and managing other employees
  • Intermediate knowledge of MS Office, including Excel and Word
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics GP is an asset
