What to expect on the job:

Purchasing Category Specialist Packaging is responsible to develop sourcing strategies through category knowledge and data analytics to source, purchase, and manage assigned categories and suppliers for High Liner Foods.

Customers are both external, and internal, including Purchasing, Corporate, Production, Engineering, Sales & Marketing, Finance, Quality, and Warehousing.

  • Source, evaluate and recommend new suppliers and materials/services that can stimulate cost savings, improve efficiencies, or reduce usage.
  • Able to lead supplier negotiations and structuring deals, drafting legal agreements.
  • Familiar with developing budgeting process and able to develop for assigned categories with support from manager. PPV tracking.
  • Analyze complex data sets, leverage supplier resources to drill down where needed to deliver category insights and results.
  • Develop and update category specific reports for monthly team meetings to present to the team.
  • Develop and manage successful relationships with suppliers and internal stakeholders at both working and senior level
  • Own category financial targets and identify levers to achieve those targets.
  • Conduct detailed spend analytics and utilize analytical expertise to establish and deliver comprehensive category strategies to support delivering measurable improvements.
  • Lead and facilitate crossfunctional team projects with internal and external stakeholders towards desired outcomes
  • Represent the packaging team in new product development projects to provide critical category insights to support successful execution.
  • Coordinate material requirements with Material Planners, Marketing Services, Scheduling, Production, Engineering, Sales and Marketing to support short and long term forecast.
  • Maintain data integrity for assigned commodities as defined by company and department guidelines.
  • Maintain price lists and support SKU setups, tracking in ERP system and generating spend reports.
  • Lead periodical performance evaluation of assigned suppliers and support the QA team to resolve any quality or service concerns.
  • Review commodity indices, be aware and stay current on market conditions that could affect price or availability of purchased items.
  • Conduct supplier meetings regularly to insure the suppliers are providing excellent service levels.
  • Knowledge and understanding of packaging sustainability initiatives and trends.

Must haves

  • University degree in a relevant field of study (Business, commerce, supply chain or engineering)
  • 5+ years of experience in procurement, sourcing, category management preferably in the food manufacturing or CPG industries
  • Experience in strategic procurement of packaging (folding carton, corrugate, poly plastics etc) is a must requirement. Additional consideration for applicants with packaging development/printing knowledge.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) coupled with a strong demonstration of confidence in difficult conversations
  • Proven negotiation, influencing and project management skills
  • Highly analytical coupled with strong critical thinking skills to build solid recommendations
