About the Role
Nelson Education is seeking an experienced Rights and Permissions Manager to join our team.

Reporting to the VP, Content Services, you will be responsible for managing publishing rights and permissions, requiring knowledge of Canadian copyright law and experience in multidisciplinary teams.

Your role will involve contributing to new curriculum resources for Alberta and Ontario while handling multiple projects, making attention to detail and organizational skills crucial.

Key Accountabilities

Project Management

  • Provide timely written and verbal directions to research vendors regarding project requirements.
  • Provide ongoing communication with research vendors throughout project to ensure deadlines are met and budgets are adhered to.
  • Assess all permission agreements to confirm that the appropriate rights have been granted.
  • Handle internal requests for rights in a timely manner, including requests to determine if we can repurpose our content in various media/formats; provide support and guidance to internal teams on Nelson rights policies generally and specific queries and issues throughout project development and production.
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance to research vendors regarding to rights database, preferred photo vendors, project status, and copyright/rights policy.
  • Participate in project meetings on a regular basis to stay abreast of projects.
  • Handle all projectrelated administrative tasks including invoice processing, maintenance of permission files, rights database set up/quality control/data integrity.

Rights Acquisition/Image Research

  • Advise/assist freelance vendors with rights acquisition/photo research, as needed.
  • Ensure written permission is acquired for all 3rd party content.
  • Negotiate competitive text and image fees with image vendors/copyright holders, as required.
  • Handle all project administrative tasks such as budget tracking, maintenance of permission files, invoice processing, and ensure accuracy of rights database records.

Requirements:

  • Postsecondary education in in related disciplines such as records management, information management or legal studies
  • Previous intellectual property management, rights clearance, and/or publishing experience an asset.
  • Experience in project management
  • Knowledge of copyright law as well as copyright policies related to the publishing industry.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Superior interpersonal, communication, analytical, and negotiation skills
  • Proactive problemsolving capabilities/decisionmaking skills.
  • Wellorganized, with strong time management skills, and competency in handling multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team members to achieve project goals
