Amnesty International Canadian Section (English Speaking) also known as AICS(ES) is looking for an Indigenous Rights Campaigner to be a part of their Policy, Advocacy and Research team.


The Indigenous Rights Campaigner has the unique opportunity to shape Amnesty International Canada Section (English Speaking) AICS(ES)' strategies, research, campaign and advocacy opportunities that drive substantial and meaningful change on the rights of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.


Reporting to the Manager of Human Rights Law, Campaigns and Advocacy and part of the Policy, Advocacy and Research team, the Indigenous Rights Campaigner (IRC) will be instrumental in identifying, building and nurturing relationships with Indigenous rights holders, grassroots organizations, and key partners to promote the rights of Indigenous Peoples and international standards of human rights, including the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The IRC will plan and implement research, advocacy, and government engagement activities, as well as grassroots mobilization activities related to Indigenous rights.


WHAT YOU'LL DO

Community Engagement, Government Relations & Advocacy (30%)

  • Build and maintain relationships with individual Indigenous rights holders and Indigenous Peoples' organizations, thereby contributing to a connected Canadian human rights ecosystem.
  • Support movementbuilding and actively engage in networks, organizations and coalitions that advocate for Indigenous rights, prioritizing support for rightsholders
- led grassroots activism.

  • Lead AICS(ES) advocacy efforts surrounding Indigenous rights and engage with government representatives, corporations, civil society organizations and grassroots activists, as well as collaborating with the Americas Regional Office to identify and promote connections with Indigenous rights movements at a regional level.
  • Monitor government activity to ensure that advocacy efforts are both timely and evidencebased including parliamentary debates, government statements, relevant parliamentary committees and media articles.
  • Contribute to a government engagement strategy for the campaigns division, and participate in meetings with federal, provincial and territorial governments.
  • Organize letter writing campaigns with mobilization and activism teams targeting government officials and develop evidenceinformed recommendations with policy makers.
  • Serve as the primary resource and point of reference for Indigenous rights information within AICS(ES), and act as the spokesperson with the media when necessary.

Campaign Strategy Development (30%)

  • Develop and maintain relationships with Indigenous Nations, individuals and organizations to be an open listener on urgent human rights priorities and identify areas of solidarity for which AICS(ES) can engage in meaningful, relevant, decolonial campaigns that align with the lived experiences of rightsholders.
  • Develop theories of change and campaign strategies, using a decolonial and intersectional lens and amplify and foreground the voices and advocacy messages of Indigenous rightsholders.
  • Coordinate with the other Policy, Advocacy, and Research team campaigners in an intersectional way to promote the mainstreaming of a decolonial and Indigenous rights lens across all campaign portfolios including climate justice and corporate accountability; gender justice; land defenders in Latin America; racial justice; strategic litigation; and tactical campaigns.
  • Organize events, convene and facilitate coalitions and networks on Indigenous Peoples' rights to build solidarity on shared advocacy messages and joint advocacy and mobilization activities.
  • Participate in the development of campaign strategies to mobilize Amnesty Canada's membership and members of the public on Indigenous rights issues including meeting and collaborating with activists, Grassroots activist leaders and coordinators.

Research (30%)

  • Design and implement ethically responsible research focusing on specific Indigenous rights to inform advocacy and campaign strategies, using intersectional analysis and participatory methods to ensure comprehensive and inclusive outcomes.
  • Conduct or coordinate primary research on specific cases in Canada linked to broader systemic issues to provide an evidencebase for the design of advocacy materials or activities.
  • Engage in research design and implementation in coordination with other campaigners, Regional Office Researchers, Amnesty's International Secretariat Researchers, or consultants, where applicable, to promo
