Reporting to the Clinical Operations Manager, the On-site Organ Donation Coordinator (ODC) functions as an integral part of the Organ Donation and Hospital Development (ODHD) team.

The ODC acts as an on-site support resource to the ODHD team during organ donation cases.

This position will collaborate with the Organ Donation Specialist (ODS) and the hospital care team when a potential donor referral is made to BC Transplant (BCT) to confirm donor suitability.

This role is trained to speak with families to ensure that the option of organ donation is offered appropriately as part of quality end of life care.

This position is also responsible for establishing effective working relationships within the multi-disciplinary team to facilitate the timely testing necessary to determine donor suitability and organ viability.

The ODC will champion organ donation while onsite and collaborate with the In Hospital Coordinator (IHC) for hospital development projects as required.


What you'll do

  • Respond promptly to the hospital's request for onsite organ donation assistance, acts as a resource for the hospital care team. Works opposite of the IHC to ensure that there is adequate coverage for the sites.
  • Meet with families at a time of crisis to provide information on donation and supports them through the donation process. An ODC strives to provide a positive and meaningful donation experience.
  • Accurately documents consent and conduct medical/social history interviews in accordance to BCT and Health Canada standards. Supports health care team with organ donor management.
  • Provide expert onsite organ donation consultation, guidance, and advice to hospital staff including physician, nurses, and social workers. Supports health care team with organ donor management queries.
  • Collect medical/legal and other information for the ODS, ensuring that the organ donation process proceeds in an effective, safe, accountable and clinically standardized manner. Maintains an accurate and detailed donor record in compliance with Health Canada Regulations surrounding donation of organs for transplantation.
  • Assist ODS to coordinate and organize necessary donor testing with different medical specialties such as cardiology, radiology, neurology etc.
  • In collaboration with the onsite IHC, participate in case debriefings, case reviews and other educational and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in the implementation of emerging best practice changes in organ donation. In collaboration with ICU, participates in hospitalbased and BCT quality assurance activities and performance metric evaluations such as Medical Record Reviews.
  • Participate in training and ongoing professional development within the relevant areas of practice and participates in the training, monitoring and precepting and evaluation of performance of new staff.
  • Participate in a 2 hour call rotation with commitment of 814 days in a 12 week call rotation.

What you bring

Qualifications:

  • A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in a Health Sciences, with a minimum of three (3) years of recent related experience in the Health Authority critical care environment and/or organ donation experience.
Skills and Knowledge

  • Demonstrated skills in conflict resolution within the healthcare environment.
  • A demonstrated ability to establish effective relationships with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm composed and focused under extremely emotional and tense situations.
  • To be empathic to the needs of families undergoing emotional trauma, sensitive to spiritual and cultural contexts of care, and interact effectively with individuals who are experiencing personal emotional trauma.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that include verbal and written communications.
  • Computer experience is essential as a significant amount of work is completed using an electronic donor record.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and antiracism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
