What responsibilities will you have in this role?
- Provides ASL and English Interpretation Services to staff and faculty as required (including Deaf, Deafened and Hard of Hearing), includes meetings and one on one consultations.
- Anticipates and assists requests for additional interpreters.
- Communicates directly with employees that are deaf, deafened and/or hard of hearing in their daytoday employment related tasks that require an interpreter.
- Provides interpretation services including emergency situations where staff need to speak with college security or other personnel who are not ASL trained.
- Reviews and prepares for interpreting situations; studies assignmentrelated resources.
- Works with related professionals and establishes linguistically appropriate communication strategies.
- Debriefs with Deaf staff, coworkers, contract employees at the conclusion of each event.
- Consults and promotes awareness of Deaf culture with students, teachers, and staff around the appropriate use of an interpreter.
- Assesses and arranges interpreting environments for successful communication dynamics.
- Investigates professional development opportunities, enhances skill development, and continues to educate on best practices in the field.
- Develops PD workshops for interpreters collaboratively.
- Provides updates on areas of interest to guide future planning.
- Mentors and guides Interpreter training Program (ITP) placement student activities.
- Monitors onsite student placement participation.
- Evaluates student progress and provides ongoing assessment of skill.
- Other related duties as assigned.
What qualifications do you need for this role?
- Threeyear diploma/degree or equivalent from a recognized postsecondary institution in OIS Certification/Screening including successful completion of a recognized ASL Interpreter Training and active membership in CASLI (Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters).
- Minimum five years experience in educational and community interpreting.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Deaf culture.
- Experience dealing with complex issues; ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
- Strong negotiation, problemsolving and decisionmaking skills to identify problems, determine possible solutions, and select appropriate actions.
- Exceptional time management, multitasking and organizational skills; ability to complete tasks and meet deadlines, while working with competing priorities and interruptions.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to be flexible and adaptable in various situations.
- Ability to travel between campuses.
- Demonstrated commitment in delivering excellent service to others as this is key in supporting the success of our students and our College.
- Strong communication, collaboration, teamwork, and people skills.
- Effective ability to interact with others and deal with situations in ways that respect diverse backgrounds, experience and styles.
- Flexibility in adapting to change and in participating in consultative decisionmaking processes.
Interview process may consist of a practical skills component.
