HOURS: Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm

Position Summary:

The Sustainability Engagement &Compliance Coordinator willbe an integral member of George Brown College (GBC)'s strategic sustainabilityteam and support the significant growth of the Sustainability portfolio.Reporting to the Manager of Sustainability & Compliance, the Sustainability Engagement &Compliance Coordinator willbe responsible for the planning and delivery of programs, events, andcommunication materials to advance institutional sustainability plans at GBC. Additionally, the Coordinator is responsiblefor developing and maintaining an environmental compliance program and willmaintain up to date knowledge of proposed and enacted regulatory changes,interpret the operational impacts from such changes and develop processes andprocedures for the introduction and integration of compliance changes.

Key responsibilities:

  • Monitor and analyze changes to laws and regulations that would impact the college and make recommendations on policies and procedures to address them. Provide guidance to various divisions on environmental issues.
  • Ensure compliance of environmental legal requirements and prepare reports on environmental performance. Advise relevant parties of any concerns in a timely manner.
  • Complete federal, provincial, and municipal environmental compliance reporting-included but not limited to the following: Ontario Blue Box regulation, National Pollutant Release Inventory, Waste audits and waste reduction plans.
  • Develop and promote environmental compliance including training, auditing, and maintaining permit compliance.
  • Plan, implement, and coordinate college-wide sustainability workshops, seminars, and events to build sustainability awareness (virtual and in-person).
  • Develop educational content and facilitate workshops/seminars related to promoting GBC related sustainability initiatives for students, staff, faculty, and various community partners.
  • Recruit, train and coordinate student volunteers, including updating, tracking, and reporting on extracurricular records where required. Define event objectives, schedules, required resources and measures of success for each event.
  • Research and stay up to date on trends, standards and practices regarding marketing, communications, and public relations, to develop, maintain and refresh all Department of Facilities and Sustainability specific outreach materials.
  • Create outreach and engagement of social media channels including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Tik Tok, a Sustainability web site, newsletters, and other engaging forms communication; ensure a steady stream of content is available online.
  • Proactively identify, cultivate, and investigate new partnerships within the GBC community to amplify key messages, drive awareness and increase audience engagement. Use various methods (surveys, aggregate data, etc.) to collect quantitative and qualitative data for waste consumption, production, and diversion initiatives.
  • Create and frequently assess effective processes for data collection for commonly reported metrics.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Educational andExperience Requirements:

  • Three-year diploma or degree or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution in a relevant field (e.g., Environmental Sciences, Business, Public Relations, Communications, Event Planning, Sustainability, Social Sciences, Behavioural Science/Psychology).
  • Four-year Bachelor's degree (Honors) in a relevant field will be an asset.
  • EP/EPt – Environmental Professional (EP); Issued by EcoCanada or fitWEL/WELL Certification is required.
  • Minimum three (3) years of demonstrated experience in initiating, communicating, and facilitating engagement and outreach events, workshops, and seminars for medium to large scale organizations.
  • Minimum three (3) years of work experience related to employee or student engagement programming and sustainability event planning.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing an environmental compliance program medium to large scale organizations.
  • Basic experience with graphic design, web content management and marketing analytic technology.
  • Experience in a post-secondary institution or similar environment is considered an asset.

Skills and Attributes:

  • Intermediate-level skills in Microsoft Excel (graphing, pivot tables, descriptive statistics), Word (report formatting), PowerPoint (presentation design), and social media (i.e. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Canva, etc.).
  • Demonstrate advanced research, project coordination and management skills (e.g., defining project scope, coordinating meetings, reporting progress, etc.).
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills, including managing multiple competing priorities with an ability to adapt quickly to emerging/competing priorities that involve a variety of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the latest trends in sustainable marketing, awareness and communications and practices.
  • Solid interpersonal skills and an ability to interact with many stakeholders.
  • Excellent problem solving, research and critical thinking skills with an ability to collaborate across diverse teams and external partners.
  • Demonstrated broad understanding of a variety of sustainability topics, as relevant for a post-secondary institution, including waste, energy/emissions, water, transportation, food, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance and manage multiple projects with their own timelines and constraints and priorities while working in an adaptable and dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups of students, employees, and the community.
  • Able to lift between 20 kg or 44 lbs (i.e., marketing, and promotional materials in rolls or boxes, transport of banners, etc.).
