Working under the leadership and direction of the Director of Primary Care, the Nurse is responsible for providing a broad range of primary medical care services to constituents of the Aboriginal Health & Wellness Centre. The Nurse assists in the development, implementation and maintenance of primary health care programs by way of the Delegated Physician Services Model utilized throughout the Clinic operations, and providing ongoing guidance and leadership to Licensed Practical Nurse(s), Medical Clerk(s) and Community Health Worker(s) in the Centre. It is expected that the Nurse have the ability and skills to work with constituents who may be hostile, oppositional and volatile, while at all times maintaining composure and behave in a professional and dignified manner. The Nurse shall ensure that all activities are undertaken in a manner that is consistent with, and complementary to, the Vision Statement, the Principles and Values and the policies and procedures of the Aboriginal Health & Wellness Centre.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Utilizing the Medicine Wheel as a culture-based tool, and operating within a Delegated Physician Services Model, provide direct medical services including: primary patient care and treatment; health promotion and education; disease prevention; and referrals to traditional health and wellness resources for constituents requiring access to the various health care programs developed for the Aboriginal community. Through the use of Electronic Medical Records (EMR), or other medical software applications utilized by the Centre, provide detailed medical input necessary for the collection and analysis of pertinent medical / patient data and statistics utilized to assess resource allocation, utilization and program effectiveness, and to coordinate work schedules and daily activities in order to ensure efficient, effective delivery of primary health care services. As a member of the Nursing Team, conduct and participate in program needs definition studies that involve the identification of existing and emerging healthcare issues, assist in the design and development of effective, culturally appropriate solutions to these issues, participate in the implementation and maintenance of these systems and programs, and provide objective input relative to the effectiveness of primary health care programs. Maintain detailed case files and records of all communications, referrals, transactions and interactions with constituents and associated support services, in order to ensure effective case management. Assist in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of the policies, procedures and nursing practices of the Aboriginal Health & Wellness Centre. Establish and maintain an effective network with a wide variety of agencies, programs and supports providing community and culturally based health, wellness and lifestyle supports to members of the Aboriginal community, for the purpose of promoting, providing and receiving constituent referrals. Participate in the delivery of external training sessions, workshops, events and internal training and development initiatives relative to the promotion of wellness and culture based health services and supports. Other related duties that may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Current registration or eligibility for registration, with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba. Demonstrated experience working within a community medical office / clinic environment combined with a comprehensive knowledge of / exposure to primary health care services, community health care programs, determinants of health, and their application to community health services. Practical experience in the operation of a personal computer, including the use of medical related software, word processing, and spreadsheet / data base applications, as well as the operation of other general office equipment. Exceptional interpersonal skills combined with superior communication skills including a demonstrated ability to facilitate presentations to groups and committees of various sizes. Demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently within a fast-paced, high stress environment. Possess a current Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence and a suitable vehicle for work-related transportation. Ability to communicate in an Aboriginal language(s) and a knowledge and understanding of traditional Aboriginal values, beliefs and healing approaches would be a definite asset. Demonstrated capacity to function effectively in a working team environment.
