U School is a program of the University of Alberta Senate that inspires students from socially vulnerable, Aboriginal (FNMI) and rural communities to discover the world of post-secondary education.

Engaging in a week-long site-based immersive education experience, students in grades 3 to 9 see their classroom lessons come alive at the U of A.

Experts from the campus community share their own educational journeys and lead hands-on sessions that tie back to the Alberta curriculum.

U School participants are inspired to begin exploring new opportunities as they meet University of Alberta students, faculty, staff, alumni, volunteers and senators.


Position
The U School Program Lead is responsible for the development, implementation, marketing and evaluation of U School.

They lead overall programming and curriculum fit for participating classes and are the key contact for U School participants, teachers and administrators, sponsors, program volunteers and U School Classroom Facilitators.

The U School Program Lead also supervises two U School Classroom Facilitators.

This position must possess an understanding of the support and engagement of volunteer ambassadors and advocates. This position also engages the advice and support of Senate's U School Committee.

This position must develop an understanding of Senate's membership and mandate, regularly attending Senate plenary sessions and committee meetings to develop U School's profile and program connections.


Duties

U School Program Curriculum Development and Teaching

  • Work with participating teachers to design U School site visit program and curriculum based on teacher, school and class needs.
  • Provide guidance and instruction to U School students as needed and as supported by the classroom teacher.
  • Ensure ongoing development and operation of the U School program to meet the needs of participating classes.
  • Lead program promotion, operation, evaluation and outcomes.
  • Maintain contact with participating teachers to increase awareness of other program offerings and curriculumrelated opportunities.
  • Support presenters with lesson plan preparation (if required) and adaptation of the curriculum content to age appropriate student levels between grades 3 to 9.

U School Leadership and Administration

  • Responsible for program design and calendar, administration, curriculum fit, promotion, volunteer recruitment and planning for classroom leadership
  • Provide leadership to the U School team and as needed serve as a Classroom Facilitator
  • Promote U School on and off campus; deliver presentations to various stakeholders including potential campus community volunteers, sponsors, teacher associations, school boards, school administrators, etc.; communicate with other campus outreach programs and other Inquiring Minds sitebased programs in Edmonton
  • Develop and maintain a wide range of relationships within the University of Alberta community, including current and potential course instructors, presenters, mentors, interviewees, and administrative staff across campus to raise awareness of the program, to provide new teaching and learning opportunities, and to effectively administer the program
