About Our Opportunity:


As the Sport and Recreation Specialist, you will work with and report to the Manager of sport and Recreation in the Community, Sport and Recreation Division.

You will coordinate programs, services and collaborate on policies and strategies that support provincial organizations and the sport and recreation sector in Nova Scotia.

Primary Accountabilities:


You will lead and collaborate on the planning, development, administration and evaluation of provincial policies, strategies and programs that aim to support and expand the capacity of the recreation and sport delivery systems.

You will also provide guidance, support and expertise to provincial organizations, branch staff, other government departments, municipalities, and communities in the development of policies, plans, and initiatives.


You will lead/coordinate and participate in appropriate committees and initiatives that advance the promotion and delivery of recreation and sport opportunities.

You will also work to advance Nova Scotia's implementation of the Framework for Recreation in Canada, through the Shared Strategy for Advancing Recreation in Nova Scotia and the implementation of the Canadian Sport Policy.


As the Specialist you will also:

  • Play a lead role in identifying and removing barriers that prevent applicants of equity-deserving groups from accessing programs and services.
  • Bring missing voices to the table and identify gaps.
  • Help ensure the lens of equity, diversity and inclusion is woven into policy, operations, and service delivery.
  • Work collaboratively with CCTH partners to advance goals related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Facilitate difficult conversations between stakeholders.
  • Articulate the importance of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Qualifications and Experience:


To be successful in this role, you will have a bachelor's degree in recreation/sport management, health promotion or community development plus three (3) years of related experience or an acceptable equivalent combination of education, training and experience in recreation, physical activity and sport and community development.


You will also have the following:

  • Experience working within the Canadian recreation, physical activity and / or sport systems at a community, regional, provincial or national level.
  • Comprehensive understanding of community, provincial, national and international trends in physical activity, sport and recreation.
  • Understanding of the issues and challenges facing Nova Scotia's communities and provincial organizations related to the provision of recreation, sport and physical activity.
  • Understanding of the development of recreation, physical activity and sport strategies, initiatives, promotion and partnerships required to realize government priorities and goals.
