Duties:


This position is responsible for the overall well-being and management of the caribou living in the Caribou Conservation Breeding Center with the main goal of supporting the recovery of the wild caribou populations of the Jasper/Banff Local Population Unit.

The position is also responsible for the day to day management and supervision of personnel supporting the Center, and for the management of the assets and financial resources.

The position will also support the implementation of the Center's research and monitoring plan, in collaboration with the caribou biologist who will be the primary lead for the research and monitoring activities.

The position will report directly to the manager of the caribou recovery program.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of an extraordinary initiative aimed at recovering one of Canada's most iconic species.

Your work will play a vital role in the restoration of caribou populations in Jasper National Park.

You will have the privilege of working at a new conservation breeding facility specifically designed for this purpose, situated south of the Jasper townsite within the boundaries of the national park.

Jasper is the largest and wildest of the Rocky Mountain National Parks extending over 11,000 square kilometres.

Over 2 million visitors a year come to explore the glaciers of the Columbia Icefield, hot springs, lakes and waterfalls and the twinkling galaxy of stars.

EDUCATION

Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a degree in biology, zoology, ecology, veterinary science, animal science or in a field relevant to the functions of the position.

Or an acceptable combination of education, training, and experience.

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of 5 years experience with large mammal management, with preference for experience with captive ungulates or experience at an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated experience in large mammal (preferably ungulate and/or wildlife) handling, transfer or translocation.
  • Minimum 5 years experience operating a captive wild animal facility, an agricultural animal facility, or working in an accredited institution, including experience in animal husbandry and managing associated equipment and infrastructure.
  • Experience in the management of financial and human resources.
  • Experience in providing leadership to multidisciplinary teams, including supervision, management and development of staff.
  • Experience in collecting monitoring/scientific data.

  • Knowledge of operation and basic maintenance of farm machinery and agricultural infrastructure.
