About the position

We are seeking an In-House Legal Counsel to join our expanding team

  • Provide legal representation for the claims department and insured parties in Property and Casualty litigation cases.
  • Manage insurance defense cases from start to finish.
  • Offer recommendations on liability, quantum assessment, and file management strategy in initial reports.
  • Advise clients on potential investigations and proactive solutions for quicker file resolution.
  • Utilize civil procedure rules to obtain plaintiff document production and early discovery dates.
  • Prepare and deliver legal documents to support various legal processes such as motions, applications, mediations, and trials.
  • Research and provide counsel on claim-related issues. Keep clients informed on legal trends.
  • Negotiate settlements with opposing parties. Provide opinions on insurance policy interpretation and coverage matters.
  • Conduct educational seminars for the claims department. Maintain effective communication with the claims team.
  • Collaborate with the Litigation Department to enhance legal services.
  • Handle insurance litigation cases of different complexities. Participate in various legal proceedings and educational activities.
  • Support fellow colleagues with legal inquiries and maintain open communication channels.

Your qualifications

  • Active member of the Law Society
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in insurance litigation; open to diverse experience levels
  • Skilled in legal research, writing legal opinions, drafting legal documents, and participating in various legal proceedings
  • Proficient in alternative dispute resolution processes
  • Trial experience, especially independent trial experience, is beneficial
  • Excellent communication, research, and negotiation skills
  • Strong organizational abilities to manage multiple case files
  • Effective in building client relationships. Bilingual in English and French
