Our client, the City of Moncton, is seeking a dynamic and skilled Solicitor to join their team.

As Solicitor, you will play a pivotal role in representing the City's legal interests. Under the direction and guidance of the City Solicitor, you will be instrumental in safeguarding and advancing the City's objectives. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to attend City Council meetings and committee sessions, contributing to high-level decision-making processes. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide advice and assistance in land development matters and real property law, including zoning, subdivision, and drainage agreements, acquisition and sale of real property and the preparation of purchase and sale agreements when necessary, and interest therein and of the law of Expropriation and Landlord and Tenant.
  • Provide advice and assistance in the fields of Labour Law, Administrative Law, Privacy Law and Access to Information.
  • Draft and amend Legislation, including Municipal By-Laws.
  • Prepare, draft and interpret agreements and contracts entered into by the City of Moncton in both official languages.
  • Provide advice and assistance in negotiations of contracts and agreements on behalf of the City.
  • Research legal matters regarding municipal affairs.
  • Prepare, appear and plead cases before administration tribunals, and all levels of Court.
  • Appear before various agencies of all levels of Government, the City Council and its committees.
  • Manage external legal counsel carrying files related to any of the above areas.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience and Qualifications

  • You hold a Bachelor of Law degree and are a member in good standing of the Law Society of New Brunswick.
  • You have a minimum of five (5) years experience in the practice of Law. Experience in the field of Municipal Law or real estate is considered an asset.
  • Bilingualism (oral and written) in both official languages.
  • You have direct knowledge of real property practices, principals, and procedures, including but not limited to web-based land management and research systems and the provincial land titles system.
  • You maintain current information and working knowledge of property values and market trends with respect to real estate and development.
  • You're able to absorb, assess and formulate solutions to complex legal and real estate issues, frequently and on short notice.
  • You are a team player with strong interpersonal, presentation and negotiation skills.
  • You're skilled in dealing effectively with elected officials, department heads, and staff of the City of Moncton.
  • You have a high level of tact and persuasion when dealing with persons inside and outside the Corporation, and strong judgement and discretion skills.

This is a full-time position based in Moncton, NB operating during regular business hours from Monday to Friday. However, occasional work outside these hours should be expected.
