Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Educates and engages the public in the history, cultural traditions, and lifestyles of Mtis during the late 1800s using storytelling and other interpretive techniques;
  • Works as a Mtis interpreter in period appropriate clothing in our HBC Fort, Livingston House, or Mission exhibits portraying daily life during the prerailway era;
  • Demonstrates traditional activities, tools, games, cooking;
  • Leads guests in handson activities;
  • Sets up and puts away artifacts and activity material daily;
  • Provides customer service and information to guests in a friendly manner;
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education and Experience:

  • Some high school education required. Postsecondary education in a related field an asset;
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered;
  • Experience speaking in front of groups; interpretive experience is a definite asset.

Skills:

  • Comfortable sharing knowledge of Mtis culture and speaking to visitors of all ages and backgrounds;
  • Knowledge and/or lived experience of Mtis history, culture, language, traditional activities and/or skills is an asset;
  • Physically capable of lifting and moving artifacts daily (up to 20lbs);
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing situations;
  • Capable of working well independently and as part of a peer group team.

Special Clothing and Equipment:

  • Appropriate costuming will be provided by Heritage Park.

Special Working Conditions:

  • This position will require the incumbent to stand and/or walk for prolonged periods of time;
  • Exposure to extremes in temperature, depending on the weather;
  • Exposure to woodsmoke for extended periods of time

Hours of Work:

  • Fulltime hours available midMay to Labour Day, with weekend work during September and October (until Thanksgiving), parttime hours also available throughout the season;
  • Schedule varies and will include weekdays, weekends, and statutory holidays.
