Job Number:49984**The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has one (1) vacancy to work in the Community Relations Section within the Equity, Inclusion and Human Rights Branch as a Community Relations Advisor.


The Community Relations Advisor will work in a team environment to assist in developing and operationalizing an organizational community engagement strategy that is equitable and inclusive.

The role will assist in coordinating and aligning community engagement activities between areas within the EPS to ensure a cohesive and coordinated approach to Community Relations.

The role will also provide support and expertise throughout the organization on community engagement projects and initiatives.


The Community Relations Coordinator will work alongside a sworn-member position to build and maintain strong relationships and policy legitimacy in the community.

Additionally, the position will be required to work closely with other areas of the Service and Branch; with key areas being Evaluation, Strategic Design, and Performance Management.


Responsibilities will include:

  • Support the development and operationalization of a Community Engagement Strategy; including developing internal practices to better coordinate initiatives and services to the community;
  • Act as a coordination point for the navigation of relationships and partnerships between the EPS and various community groups;
  • Assist in building and maintaining relationships that facilitate effective twoway communication with the diverse communities of Edmonton; including Indigenous, Cultural and newcomer communities.
  • Work closely with other areas of the branch and division to ensure that the Service moves toward common goals and outcomes for community engagement practices;
  • Identify opportunities for mutually beneficial collaboration with key community groups.
  • Research and develop new frameworks, bestpractices and methodologies associated with communitypolice relations.
  • Engage with various areas of the EPS to provide support and guidance on community engagement projects initiatives.
  • Develop and implement engagement plans as required alongside the Strategic Design Section and other areas of the service.
  • Represent the EPS at community tables while working to bring the voices and perspectives from diverse communities to decision making tables at EPS.
  • Evaluate community support letter requests and draft support letters for partner agencies as required;
  • Use project management methodologies to identify, manage and mitigate risks to projects, strategies and the organization, as well as perform project closing activities such as conducting post project evaluations and capturing lessons learned.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and networking amongst bureaus, across the service, and with community partners.
  • Prepare and deliver reports and presentations to executive audiences as required.
  • Contribute to and uphold a positive culture.
  • Analyze and implement action plans to support emerging issues and opportunities
  • Use evaluative, strategic and critical approaches from an inclusive and equitable lens to demonstrate business needs, achievements and opportunities for growth.
  • Due to the complexity of the work, including highly sensitive topics (EDI, antiracism, cultural engagement and policy development), this position will also have its own project management responsibilities
  • It will oversee and lead (from project planning through to development implementation) politically sensitive projects
  • Work with the support of the CRS staff and internal/external partners
  • The project work can be both internally focused and externally focused
  • Research emerging trends and provide research/analytical support for special projects, prepare charts, graphs and textual presentations of data collected and summarize using standardized tools and methods

Qualifications:

  • Lived experience and understanding of Indigenous, diverse, and marginalized communities is preferred.
  • University degree/Diploma in Education or a Human Services field, e.g. Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Indigenous Studies
  • Minimum of seven (7) years' experience working with government and community organizations in roles that support community development processes, capacity building, collaborations and organizational change is preferred.

  • Ability to operate within the community at both a strategic and grassroots level, while being able to develop and maintain appropriate community expectations that link to organizational priorities.
