The Communications Advisor is a member of the Urban Planning and Economy (UPE) Department's communications, engagement and external relations team that provides integrated services to support the business goals of the department and the City.


Urban Planning and Economy is a forward-looking department that plans, promotes and advocates change that moves this city towards the Edmonton envisioned by the residents we serve.

The department takes a leadership role in implementing the City's Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience Strategy, which contributes to The City Plan goal of creating a healthy, urban and climate resilient city.

  • Collaborate with colleagues on the UPE team to develop and implement integrated communications, engagement and external relations plans related to the City's environment and climate goals
  • Develop communications and marketing strategies that support business plans around changing public behaviour and that help achieve the City's environmental objectives
  • Collaborate with other communications, engagement and external relations teams across the organization to support the business needs of the City of Edmonton relating to environment and climate change
  • Identify emerging issues and provide timely advice, responsive issues management and effective strategies to mitigate risks to the organization's reputation
  • Manage media relations, plan and manage proactive and reactive media events, develop consistent messaging, coach spokespeople and serve as a spokesperson
  • Work with both internal and external support services, such as designers, research companies and marketing agencies, to help create effective strategies to meet the business needs of the department
  • Write news releases, public service announcements, media advisories, brochures, newsletters and other communications products
  • Edit, develop and update online and 311 content for programs, projects and initiatives
  • Use diverse communications tools and tactics, such as onsite video/photo captures and engaging posts for social media, to meet communications goals
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Degree in a communications, public relations, or related field, supplemented by a minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs, marketing or public information position OR diploma in a communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position
  • Relationshipbuilding skills with ability to identify and manage issues through a client consulting approach
  • Knowledge and understanding of environment and climate change issues and developing communications strategies that support actions to address these issues
  • Demonstrated skill in continually assessing the effectiveness of communications, engagement and external relations strategies to ensure they are achieving outcomes with an eye to adjusting as necessary
  • Experience in using communications tools and tactics, such as advertising, printing, graphic design, photography, traditional media, social media and webbased products
  • Excellent writing skills to produce materials such as advertising copy, blogs and video scripts
  • Experience in developing communications strategies that support public engagement plans and activities
  • Demonstrated experience with media relations, coaching spokespeople and acting as a spokesperson
  • Experience in change management communications and/or marketing is an asset
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, including apps and Gmail is required
  • Superior written and verbal skills, including presentations
