Role Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Director of Timber Production and Audit , the primary purpose is to ensure compliance and consistency at a Provincial level in the delivery and implementation of Alberta's timber production audit procedures, legislation, policies, and regulations. This ensures that the measurement and reporting of timber harvesting in the province is done accurately and the timber resource is managed in a sustainable manner.

The Unit Head will oversee two professional staff members and will serve as a liaison with industry stakeholders, public clients, PHQ divisional staff, regional offices, inter-provincial entities, and other divisions within the Department.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing the standards and protocols under which timber measurement, fibre usage, and harvest reporting shall be conducted in the province. Includes the development and implementation of policy related to timber production auditing.
  • Ensure Albertans receive an economic return for use of fibre harvested from forested public lands, including verification that appropriate timber dues have been levied and collected.
  • Provide direction and interpretation on related legislation, policy and approved practices to Department staff and industry clients.
  • Ensure sustainable forest management through adaptive forest management planning and practices by government and industry, coupled with appropriate compliance, assurance and reporting mechanisms.
  • Provide technical expertise; act as a Department expert in the area of timber reporting to ensure provincial consistency. Respond to requests for harvest statistics and analysis.
  • Provide technical support for technology transfer for regional and industry staff.
  • Ensure staff carry out their duties in an operationally consistent and safe manner and are offered developmental opportunities to increase their skills, abilities and knowledge.

Qualifications

Education:
A degree (4 years) in Forestry or related Natural Resource Management field plus four (4) years directly related experience.

Equivalency as described below.
  • A two (2) year diploma supplemented by six (6) years of related experience
  • Directly related experience and or education may be considered on a one-for-one basis
Assets:
  • Experience with various audit methods and techniques is also required.
  • Candidates must be eligible for registration with the Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals.
  • Audit training in recognized certification programs such as ISO or CSA would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of or experience with database management systems (e.g. Oracle, SQL Server) would be considered an asset.

This is a full-time, permanent opportunity located in Edmonton (preferred). This position works Monday to Friday, 8:15 AM - 4:30 PM, 36.25 hours a week.
