There is an exciting Medical Leadership opportunity available as the Senior Medical Director, Indigenous Health (Worksite location is flexible). The Indigenous Partnerships team leads Interior Health (IH) in the commitment to work together with First Nation and Métis partners to change the health system and eliminate racism and discrimination at Interior Health.

The Interior region is home to the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Tŝilhqot’in, Secwépemc, Dãkelh Dené, St’át’imc, Syilx, Nlaka’pamux, and Ktunaxa Nations, comprised of 54 First Nations Communities. IH recognizes Métis Nation BC, the 15 Métis Chartered Communities within the Interior, and the contributions of Métis people in the interior to Indigenous knowing and being.

Working alongside and reporting to the Vice President, Indigenous Partnerships, the Senior Medical Director (SMD) provides senior medical administrative input into equity-based decision-making in relation to strategic and operational matters of the Indigenous Partnerships portfolio and leadership team. The SMD provides leadership, direction, and support to the leaders within the assigned portfolio and cross-portfolio to the Executive Medical Group. The SMD builds the capacity for effective medical staff governance, integrated leadership, and physician engagement. The SMD improves the cultural safety and quality of medical care within IH by collaborating directly with physicians, other healthcare professionals, portfolios, committees, Indigenous partners, and medical governance groups.

As part of the Indigenous Partnerships team, the SMD will help guide the continued implementation of the Indigenous Health and Wellness Strategy 2022-2026. To improve the cultural safety and quality of medical care within IH by collaborating directly with physicians, other health-care professionals, portfolios, committees and medical governance structures.

To provide leadership, direction, and support to the portfolio leadership.

Patient Safety and Quality Care Concerns and Restorative Approaches to Harm

Planetary Health and Sustainability and Adaptation within the Climate Crisis

Models integrated leadership by working effectively with administrative counterpart(s).

Participates in the development and implementation of the strategic plan for the Aboriginal Partnerships.

Informs VP portfolios of Medical Staff issues, plans, or processes that may significantly impact the management of those portfolios.

Participates on provincial committees as an IH or MOH representative, as directed by the VP, Medical Affairs or VP, Indigenous Partnerships.

Based on clearly-defined leadership accountabilities, mentors and develops Indigenous physician leaders, including Chiefs of Staff, Program Medical Directors, and other senior physician leaders across all portfolio.

Collaborates with the Southern Medical Program and the UBC Faculty of Medicine to facilitate successful achievement of the academic mandate, as related to Indigenous mandates.

Considers UBC and IH academic perspectives in strategy, planning, and promotion of clinical teaching and/or research opportunities and the recruitment of Indigenous academic physicians.

Medical Staff Health Human Resources (HHR)

In collaboration with the HHR EMD Lead and the Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee (HAMAC), participates in the development of an IH physician HHR plan; Ensures implementation of a standardized and effective credentialing and privileging process for all applicants to IH facilities in compliance with the provincial direction of the Physician Quality Assurance Steering Committee (PQASC) and with IH Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Policies.

Ensures standardized physician impact assessments are undertaken and approved by site administrative and medical leaders for all applicants to the Medical Staff before recommending them for privileges.

In compliance with the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Policies, ensures that adequate processes exist at the LMAC and RMAC levels for the periodic review of Medical Staff for reappointment or a change in privileges.

Collaborates in the recruitment and retention of Medical Staff by consistently applying IH policies and providing pertinent HHR advice.

Quality

Collaborates with the Executive Medical Director, Quality and Patient Safety and the Corporate Director, Quality, Risk and Accreditation, in:

The engagement of physicians and physician leaders in the Quality, Risk, and Accreditation (QRA) strategic plan.

The development of an integrated process to address patient safety concerns and critical incident reviews, including a strategy to share learning across the Health Authority.

Ensures, through the Chiefs of Staff, that Departments undertake regular quality reviews and report them up through their local multi-disciplinary quality committees or Local MACs.

In collaboration with the Corporate Director, Indigenous Health & Wellness, helps manage IHWS implementation. This job posting is for a position covered by the Provincial Health Officer’s mandatory COVID-19 vaccination order and selected applicant(s) must comply with the requirements of the order.
