Thales provides world-leading Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) and interlocking for mass rail transit applications globally. The Centre of Competence for Urban Rail Signalling is located right before you at mid-town Toronto. As the largest office in Canada, we house a department for every step of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) This includes Software, Hardware, Systems Design, Verification & Validation, Operations, etc. The supporting corporate shared services teams in Finance, Human Resources and IT is also located at the office. Our office space was designed to provide a sustainable, healthy workplace that expresses TRSS’s brand while increasing collaboration. Features include Greenguard furniture, EnergyStar appliances, low-emitting adhesives, sealants, and sliding glass doors on internal offices provide daylight and views to the outside. The Safety Assurance and Independent Validation Manager will manage all Safety Assurance and/or Independent Validation activities for a specified portfolio of projects or products. Safety Assurance and Independent Validation activities involve providing independent assurance to the Business Line Safety Authority that the rail signaling and train control solutions are safe and fit for deployment for test, trial operation or revenue.
Providing leadership and guidance to assist in safety-related and/or validation-related decision-making. Guide the team in the use of established Safety Assurance and/or Independent Validation processes.
Ensuring that the team under their direct management supervision clearly understand their safety and/or validation objectives and responsibilities.
Overseeing the professional development of staff, manage staff competencies and training to ensure that suitably competent staff is assigned to perform all activities.
Managing headcount needs to ensure that the required activities are completed on time and within budget.
Providing support to the team members in the execution of their work and in their interaction with internal and external stakeholders, coaching them on how to perform their work, monitoring their progress and directing them on priorities in alignment with the Head of Department.
Ensuring that all activities are conducted to confirm that the products and applications developed as GTS Canada solutions are fit for their intended application, use and/or purpose in the intended operational environments (i.e. meet stakeholder expectations) through compliance with company processes, industry standards and best practices for the development of safety-critical systems.
Review and approve the work of Safety Assurance and Independent Validation Specialists who have evaluated: system, hardware and software requirements against the intended environment/use; developed systems, software and hardware against respective requirements; adequacy of integration, testing and verification outputs; deviations from plans, ensuring associated risks (impact) are appropriately classified, recorded and submitted for disposition; Review and approve the work of Safety Assurance and Independent Validation Specialists who have performed: audits, inspections or reviews of project artefacts; evaluations of the developed systems, hardware and software against the requirements of the project plans, CENELEC and/or AREMA.
Acting in the direct capacity of System Assurance Manager (SAM) for several projects within a particular project or product portfolio. Assessing the development and verification artefacts to ensure compliance with company processes, industry standards and best practices for the development of safety-critical systems. Supporting the implementation of processes that align with industry best practices, international standards, and the expectations of our customers, including development of awareness and training programs.
Conducting Safety Authorization Readiness Reviews (SARRs), completing the associated Checklists and on the basis of the checks, confirming to the Safety Authority that a solution is safe and fit for its intended use (e.g. deployment for test or revenue).
Enforcing the consistent and correct application of these processes in commercial Projects and Product development.
Performing safety audits and independent safety assessments for commercial Projects and Product development.
Identifying issues related to technical safety and applied processes, and ensuring timely escalation and resolution of the issues.
Providing direct support to the Bids and Proposals process such that informed decisions can be made regarding technical and contractual safety issues at the earliest opportunity in a commercial Project’s lifecycle.
Staying current with practices and processes applicable to railway and other safety-critical industries (e.g. aerospace, military, nuclear, modern medical technology).
If/when requested, act as Delegate for the Safety Authority.
in Electronics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
~15 years of experience in a senior role in Safety Engineering, Safety Assurance or Independent Validation
~ Knowledge of railway signaling systems, train control systems, fixed and moving block signaling principles, relay-based and/or computer-based interlocking design
~ Good understanding of systems engineering, software engineering and functional safety
~ Detailed knowledge of system safety lifecycle, system requirements definition, safety design concepts (system and software), safety and risk analysis
~ Extensive experience with safety standards (CENELEC, IEC, IEEE, MIL), best practices, safety methods and techniques (HAZID, HAZOP, PHA, SHA, OSHA, FTA, FMEA/FMECA, FSA) and hazard management
~ Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate technical staff
~ Good technical writing skills, excellent communication skills; excellent command of the English language, both written and oral
