Natural Areas Inventory Coordinator

Found in: Jooble CA O C2 - 1 week ago

Ontario, Canada WorkCabin Full time

Overview

The Hamilton Natural Areas Inventory (NAI) is a cooperative project between the Hamilton Naturalists’ Club, the City of Hamilton, and the Hamilton Conservation Authority. From 1990 to 2014, three NAIs have been conducted with a focus on identifying significant natural areas for protection, and for determining the status of a range of species (i.e., plants, plant communities, reptiles, amphibians, birds, butterflies, and odonates).

More recently, the partners identified above and others have developed the Hamilton Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) in response to the joint global biodiversity and climate change crises. The BAP is intended to guide the protection and restoration of biodiversity in Hamilton through collaborative and multi-stakeholder action.

The purpose of the current NAI project is to update and build on earlier NAI work to establish a baseline by which to measure positive and negative changes in biodiversity over time. The NAI will be completed between 2024-26, and will serve as a “state of biodiversity” measure for the BAP, as well as refining our understanding of threats and restoration opportunities across Hamilton.

Job Responsibilities

The NAI Coordinator will be responsible for the overall coordination and implementation of the NAI project. The Coordinator will be required to work closely with and receive direction from the Project Steering Committee (PSC) and Technical Steering Committee (TSC) in carrying out the project. Key responsibilities of the position include:

· Conduct a background review of previous inventory work and other existing available information sources to identify data gaps

· Work with the PSC and TSC to refine the scope of the NAI and prioritize work over the three-year project

· Develop a project timeline and annual work plans, and monitor progress, including regular reporting to the PSC and TSC

· Identify funding opportunities and prepare funding applications to secure additional project funding sources, and complete any related interim and final reporting for funding agencies

· Assist the TSC in interviewing and hiring contract staff (biologists, GIS, etc.) for the project

· Work with the TSC to plan field work and supervise contracted experts and seasonal staff as required

· Work with the PSC and TSC to engage First Nations in the development and implementation of the NAI project

· Organize and attend TSC meetings, and complete other project administrative duties as required

· Conduct outreach and engagement regarding the project, and respond to public and media enquiries as required

· Work with the TSC and contracted experts/seasonal staff to review and revise the local status of species wherever appropriate based on new occurrence information and other considerations

· Complete quality review of collected data, and add all new project data to the Natural Heritage Database

· Produce / support production of GIS mapping to illustrate the findings of the NAI

· Compare project findings to previous NAIs to identify broad trends in ecological health of the natural heritage system

· Compile information and prepare a project report on the baseline state of biodiversity in Hamilton

· Provide a summary of recommendations to project partners, including the City of Hamilton for consideration and potential implementation through the Urban and Rural Hamilton Official Plans, or other related strategies or plans

Qualifications

Education and experience you will need to have:

· A university degree or college diploma in biology, ecology, environmental science, or natural resources management, or a related field, with a minimum of three (3) years related work experience

· Working experience with Ecological Land Classification

· Good flora and fauna identification skills and experience with inventory protocols for a variety of taxa

· Excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders

· Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

· Strong time management skills and ability to balance multiple files and priorities

· Project management experience, including working on projects with multiple stakeholder organizations
