Summary:
The HR Manager plays a key role in shaping our company's culture and ensuring that we attract, develop, and retain top talent in our veterinary hospitals. This role is responsible for a wide range of HR functions at our hospitals in Canada, including onboarding, employee relations, performance management, employee engagement, and HR compliance. The HR Manager will provide on-site HR support, as well as remote support for hospitals in other regions (B.C., Calgary, Ontario, and Nova Scotia).

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Serves as the front-line HR resource for employees and managers, answering HR related questions, addressing workplace concerns, providing guidance on HR-related matters and promoting a positive and inclusive culture at assigned hospitals.
  2. Partners with HR COES on the rollout of HR programs, including proactive communication on timeline, key dates, and changes. Anticipates and communicates challenges impacting the employee experience. Manages, investigates, and resolves complex employee relations issues. Provides detailed reports summarizing the findings and determinations of investigations and collaborates with HRBPs and legal counsel on recommendations as appropriate/required.
  3. Coaches leaders through performance concerns and assists them with the necessary documentation to properly address misconduct, policy violations, and poor performance. Supports our performance review processes, ensuring reviews are conducted on time and promote fair and equitable treatment. Provides input around merit, promotions, job reclassifications, and salary changes.
  4. Oversees the employee lifecycle (from onboarding to offboarding) for all employees in assigned hospitals. Ensures a seamless, welcoming, and positive onboarding experience for all newly hired employees. Schedules and facilitates local orientation programs and makes recommendations to improve the new hire experience. Completes exit interviews and shares insights with the HRBP and hospital leadership team.
  5. Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance. Administers leave of absences, including sending out appropriate paperwork, tracking hours, keeping managers informed of leave requests and leave dates, and ensuring compliance with local and federal laws. Participates in the interactive process with employees to determine Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance and reasonable accommodations.
  6. Completes background checks, orders equipment and assists new hires with onboarding paperwork including I-9 verification.
  7. Leverages data and analytics to generate meaningful HR insights and strategies to enhance employee engagement and retention. Supports leaders in the recruiting process by helping to screen potential candidates, schedule interviews, and prepare offer letters as needed.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's degree or at least 5 years of HR management experience At least 2 years progressive HR experience; 2+ years of employee relations investigation experience strongly preferred.
  2. Proficiency in MS Office applications and experience working with HRIS systems; Ceridian experience a plus.
  3. Organized, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and set priorities in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  4. Solid understanding of HR principles, practices, and employment laws.
  5. Comfortable with navigating ambiguous situations.
  6. Periodic travel may be required.

Compensation & Benefits:
The compensation range for this position is $85k-105k depending on experience.
