Role Purpose


Reporting to the Director, Health and Safety, the HSE Manager will work closely with the HSE team ensuring all safety norms are maintained. This is a one-year contract position and will be operating out of the Ontario East region (Belleville / Brockville / Kingston/ Peterborough).


Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Develops, implements and maintains safety programs, policies and procedures such as the hearing conservation program, WHMIS and the designated substances program.
  • Liaises with members of the Human Resources team to resolve issues relating to Return to Work, Labour Relations, Workplace Violence and Critical Injuries.
  • Prepares reports and presents to the Regional Leadership Team on health and safety.
  • Acts as a liaison with Ministry of Labour (MOL) and other external agencies and officials to resolve issues in relation to occupational health and safety; participates in the resolution of internal labour relations matters related to health and safety.
  • Develops and delivers ongoing health and safety training to members of all rank; identifies organizational training needs; researches, develops and delivers training on new health and safety initiatives as required.
  • Investigates and evaluates requests for assistance on health and safety issues, complaints and concerns regarding working conditions, equipment, methods and procedures.
  • Supports workplace violence prevention programs, including education, training, and resources; liaises with the Workplace Violence Prevention Coordinator if incidents meet the test of workplace violence.
  • Advises senior management regarding construction projects’ compliance with legislation.
  • Reviews drawings and recommends changes. Advises on risk assessments, mitigation plans, and safety plans as required; performs audits as required.
  • Liaises with third party contractors to institute mitigation measures; inspects new and renovated facilities to ensure compliance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Position Requirements


  • Post-secondary education in health and safety, or equivalent education and experience.
  • CRSP, NCSO or other professionally recognized safety certification.
  • Experienced with COR and ISO 45000 Certification.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience, with a minimum of five years of progressive Health and Safety experience in a management role.
  • Infrastructure and Surface Mining industry experience considered an asset.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate hazards to develop hazard control systems.
  • Proven safety leadership experience with the ability to motivate and inspire.
  • Experience in adult education, training and curriculum development is an asset.
  • Results-driven with ability to deliver success in a fast-paced environment.
  • Outcome focused, critical thinker with the ability to analyse and visualize to ensure continuous improvement across our business.
  • Must be a self-starter who is willing to work on their own initiative.
  • Ability to connect and interact with people to seek different perspectives.
  • Superb communication and interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Strong ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Demonstrate versatility and resourcefulness in overcoming business challenges.
