GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:

With over 42 years of operations, Skills for Change is a highly respected non-profit charity with a province wide reputation for pioneering programs that respond to shifting immigration and workplace trends and lead to employment. We offer a range of accelerated programs including mentoring, employment, settlement, language training together with specialized programs for skilled trades, women, and youth. We have 5 locations across the GTA and serve 16,000 clients annually. We believe we are in the best position to provide thought leadership through evidence-based programming, impact stories and proactive policy advocacy using knowledge mobilization products.

PROGRAM NATURE AND SCOPE:

The Black Youth in STEM Program is designed to provide comprehensive support to Black youth in Toronto and the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Areas (GTAH) interested in pursuing careers in STEM. This program offers mentorship, networking opportunities, and skill development in STEM disciplines while addressing systemic barriers, including anti-Black racism, faced by Black youth in accessing STEM education and careers.

The ideal candidate has:

  • Knowledge about Greater Toronto’s Black ∕African-diasporic communities including LGBTQi2S+ and the issues facing members of those communities.
  • Knowledge/understanding of and sensitivity to issues of concern to Black Youth between the ages of 14-18, immigrants and refugees.
  • Knowledge of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion best practices and Anti-Black Racism frameworks.
  • Experience working on a project related to the Black community.
  • We encourage applications from candidates who identify as Black or identify with the African diaspora.
  • Proficiency in designing and creating data collection trackers and generating various reports at an intermediate to advanced level.
  • Proven experience in developing and delivering STEM related workshops specifically designed for youth.
  • The ability to create engaging and accessible content is essential.
  • Intermediate to master level skills in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google Suite. You'll use these tools to create materials and support seniors in their learning journey.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity in working with youth from the Black community. This includes understanding both visible and invisible dimensions of diversity. As a workshop facilitator, you'll interact with youth from the diverse Black community diaspora.
  • A strong commitment to maintaining high standards of culturally responsive service delivery.
  • Awareness of the unique social issues faced by Black youth understanding the specific challenges encountered by black immigrants and refugees.
  • Familiarity with community resources and services related to mental health and wellness. Connecting youth to appropriate support networks is crucial.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.
  • Proficiency in planning, implementing, and leading group activities for the workshops.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task while maintaining a high level of accuracy. Managing workshop schedules and materials efficiently is vital.
  • Demonstrated initiative, sound judgment, and effective problem-solving ability.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • STEM Workshop facilitation for multiple locations within the GTA
  • Conduct thorough client intake assessments, considering individual needs, safety risk levels, and information related to settlement and programs within the organization.
  • Develop, promote, and deliver specialized STEM literacy workshops specifically designed for Black youth between the ages of 14-18 years old.
  • Make appropriate referrals to other community programs within Skills for Change.
  • Ensure workshops are accessible and engaging for participants with varying levels of prior knowledge.
  • Maintain accurate participants and program records in Salesforce and other designated databases and generate program statistics and other reports as requested to inform management decisions.
  • Collect both qualitative and quantitative data during workshops (e.g., participant feedback, progress, challenges).
  • Generate program statistics and other reports as you conduct training workshops.
  • Participate in areas of professional development and training that are critical to the needs the client population.
  • Conduct clients’ satisfaction surveys to inform program development and expansion as required and collaborate with other programs across the organization.
  • Prepare for and participate in regular scheduled supervision, team meetings and other internal and external committees as required.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and professionalism as outlined in agency privacy and confidentiality policy.
  • Be flexible to take on other duties as required by management based on department needs.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:

  • Post-Secondary degree in social work and/or credentials as a Social Worker, Community (Support) Worker, or Career Counsellor is preferred, but the organization will be interested in any candidates with relevant experience, or any transferrable skills that could be repurposed for the role.
  • Experience in facilitation, adult education, project coordination, execution, monitoring and reporting, preferably in community development projects or in a non-profit environment.
  • Minimum 2 years direct experience in a similar capacity or related subject area preferred
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends when necessary. Adapting to seniors’ schedules and program demands is important.
  • Must own and drive a vehicle.
  • Experience operating from an anti-Black racism lens. Sensitivity to diverse perspectives and commitment to equity are critical when working with black youth.
  • Requires a minimum of 2 years of experience developing and delivering learning and training programs (online, classroom).
  • Ability to provide a clear, mandatory vulnerable sector check prior to employment. Ensuring the safety and well-being of black senior participants is paramount.
