JOB DESCRIPTION:

HR Project Partners is seeking resumes for an Accountant on behalf of a client. The ideal candidate will have 5 years of experience in the construction or related industry, a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, and a Chartered Professional Accountant certification.


This is a full-time position based in St. John’s, NL.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with Canadian GAAP and IFRS.
  • Oversee project accounting and consolidate financial reports from various construction sites.
  • Develop, monitor, and update project budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Analyze budget variances and recommend corrective actions.
  • Implement cost control measures and track project costs, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractors.
  • Prepare cost-benefit analyses for current and prospective projects.
  • Manage federal and provincial tax filings, including GST/HST, payroll taxes, and other relevant construction-related taxes.
  • Ensure compliance with all tax regulations and identify opportunities for tax optimization.
  • Lead internal and external audits, ensuring adherence to financial policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with construction industry regulations and financial legislation.
  • Monitor and manage cash flow to ensure adequate funding for projects.
  • Oversee accounts payable and receivable, including progress billings and retention accounts.
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to support strategic decision-making.
  • Evaluate financial implications of contract terms, bids, and proposals.
  • Identify and implement improvements in financial systems and processes.
  • Leverage technology to enhance efficiency and accuracy in financial reporting.
  • Supervise and mentor the accounting team.
  • Provide training and professional development opportunities to staff.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Master's degree in Accounting or Business Administration is an asset.
  • Active Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation in Canada.
  • Minimum 5 years experience is required.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ATTRIBUTES:

  • Familiarity with project accounting, cost accounting, and financial management in the construction context.
  • Ability to interpret complex financial data and provide actionable insights.
  • High level of accuracy in preparing and reviewing financial documents.
  • Meticulous attention to detail in all aspects of work.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Experience with ERP systems relevant to the construction industry.
  • Strong sense of integrity and adherence to professional ethical standards.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently with little direction and/or within a team environment;
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to forecast, analyze and work under pressure;
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities; and
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
