Business Development Manager (North America)

Position Overview
Reporting to the Commercial Director, the Business Development Manager (North America) will be the first permanent hire in the region. This role is responsible for driving business growth, generating new leads, and expanding the customer base across Canada and the United States. As part of the global sales team, the Business Development Manager (North America) will focus on identifying potential clients within the research industry, building and fostering relationships, and converting prospects into loyal customers. A strong emphasis will be placed on understanding customers' needs and aligning the company's products and services to meet those requirements.
The regions of primary focus for this role are the western states of both Canada and the United States. Additionally, the role will involve contributing to the development of strategies for expansion into new territories. Travel to North American clients and attendance at industry events will form a key part of this position.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Generation: Work with the marketing team to utilise various channels such as cold calling, email marketing, social media, and networking events to identify and generate new leads.
- Relationship Building: Build and maintain strong relationships with industry influencers and potential customers in the Higher Education and Research sectors across the region.
- Sales Presentations: Prepare and deliver persuasive sales presentations and software demonstrations to customers, highlighting the unique selling points of our client's offerings and their value proposition.
- Proposal Development: Collaborate with the sales and marketing teams to create customised proposals and quotes that align with the customer's specific requirements.
- RFPs: Take responsibility for the completion of high-quality responses to RFPs for customers in the NA region, project managing inputs from across our client's teams who support winning submissions.
- Negotiations: Engage in negotiations with customers to finalise contracts and agreements.
- Sales Targets: Work towards achieving individual and team sales targets and contribute to the overall business development objectives of the organisation.
- Reporting: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of sales activities, customer interactions, and sales pipeline using Hubspot.
- Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including marketing, product development, and customer success to ensure seamless customer experiences.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree in business, marketing and/or certifications in sales and business development.
- Proven track record in sales and business development, from within the Research and / or Higher Education sector.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build and maintain strong customer relationships at all levels from frontline user to board level.
- Strong negotiation and persuasion abilities to close deals and meet sales targets.
- Results-driven and self-motivated with a focus on achieving and exceeding sales goals.
- Familiarity with CRM software and sales tools for efficient lead tracking and management.
- Good analytical skills to assess market trends, customer behaviour, and competition.
- Able to learn the company's offerings to effectively communicate their value to customers.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
Salary & Benefits
- Salary Range: CAN $75 - $85k base (or a USD equivalent package)
- Commission based on quarterly target

Working Location
This role is offered as fully remote. We would expect the successful candidate to be regularly travelling to meet with Customers at their offices and at conferences across the North America region.
Our client's Head Office is in London, UK and it is expected that there will be some travel to the UK required for onboarding and training.
