Job Title: Systems Design Specialist


Position Summary

We are seeking a Systems Design Specialist to join our team in Toronto.

In this role, you will be responsible for the design, analysis, modeling, and simulation of communication-based train control systems. You will work to develop and define system design features that meet customer requirements, ensuring compliance with technical specifications. Your work will involve creating subsystem requirements, designing blocks, interlocking control tables, and application databases for software subsystems. Additionally, you will analyze and evaluate system performance, contributing to the preparation of technical contract deliverables.

The role requires a commitment to performing design work accurately, within budget, and on schedule, as outlined in approved work packages. You will collaborate closely with a team of engineers, under the guidance of a Work Package Manager and with oversight from a Systems Architect and/or Manager.


Essential Functions / Key Areas of Responsibility

Technical Responsibilities:

  • Translate customer requirements into conceptual designs and associated documentation through operational analyses, simulations, and technical trade-off studies.
  • Develop new concepts or modify existing designs to meet customer needs.
  • Prepare system, subsystem, and interface requirement specifications by analyzing, decomposing, and modeling customer requirements within the train control domain.
  • Author the Operational Concept Document.
  • Conduct technical and engineering tasks to define system design, subsystem requirements, and application databases for software subsystems, including feasibility analyses and simulations.
  • Develop specialized signaling design skills in areas such as:
  • Signaling principles
  • Block design
  • Interlocking control tables
  • Safe braking models
  • Performance analysis and headway simulations
  • Application database design
  • Develop specialized network design skills in areas such as:
  • Communication network requirements and design (wired and wireless)
  • Network configuration and analysis, covering aspects like reliability, security, scalability, and maintainability
  • Troubleshooting complex network issues and evaluating third-party communication networks
  • Support bids and proposals, including requirements compliance assessment, gap analysis, architecture design, simulation, and cost estimation.
  • Present technical designs and reports clearly and concisely to customers and other stakeholders.
  • Propose and update processes and standards based on systems engineering knowledge.
  • Ensure compliance with signaling design standards and principles.
  • Interface with Software, Hardware, and IVVQ teams to resolve in-house and field test issues.
  • Lead technical discussions and present solutions to both internal and external stakeholders.


Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Systems, Mechatronics, Electrical, Computer), Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Relevant experience in developing software-based system applications.
  • Knowledge of modern software engineering practices, methods, and tools.
  • Understanding of the systems development life cycle.
  • Strong marketing and presentation skills.


Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience with tools such as DOORS, Melody Advance, etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of automated train control systems and systems engineering principles.
  • Familiarity with rail signaling.
  • Experience in work package management.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to communicate and advocate for products to customers with varying levels of expertise in automated systems.


Management Responsibilities:

  • Supervise contractors and other systems specialists by defining tasks, coaching, monitoring progress, and setting priorities.
  • Propose work package estimates and descriptions based on project requirements.
  • Prepare and deliver regular status reports to stakeholders.
  • Identify and implement process improvement initiatives.


Safety Responsibilities:

  • Promote a safety culture with a focus on product safety.
  • Ensure safety is integrated into the design by identifying and addressing safety-related issues early in the process.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Medium-level expertise in URS systems, with at least 3 years of experience in systems of similar complexity.
  • Intermediate-level expertise in specialized engineering skills within the CBTC domain.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong domain knowledge of automated train control systems.
  • Proficiency in systems engineering principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of modern software engineering practices and the systems development life cycle.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
  • Proficient presentation skills.
  • Experience with tools like DOORS and Melody Advance.
  • Knowledge of rail signaling (desirable).
