Additional information regarding the Board is available on the Board’s website at This position is available to qualified elementary and secondary teachers for the 2024-2025 school year with the possibility of continuing beyond that time at the candidate's and the Board's mutual agreement. The Teaching and Learning coordinator (Indigenous Education Lead) will enhance Indigenous education across the school board by collaborating with Indigenous communities, staff, and external organizations. This role promotes understanding and respect for Indigenous histories, cultures, and perspectives among all students and staff. The successful candidate will lead and develop a central team to coordinate, design and deliver system and school professional development to build educators’ capacity to meet the learning needs of Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. The successful candidate will work closely with senior staff, the Program Department, school staff and the Indigenous Education Advisory Committee to improve Indigenous student achievement and well-being, enhance the knowledge and awareness of all students and staff about First Nation, Métis and Inuit cultures, histories and perspectives.
The successful candidate will report directly to the System Principal of Program Services.


Key Responsibilities:

● Advocate for Indigenous education within the school board.
● Develop, monitor, and report on the Indigenous Board Action Plan (BAP).
● Lead the development and implementation of Indigenous education strategies, programs, and initiatives.● Collaborate with senior administration to integrate Indigenous perspectives into policies, curriculum, and practices.
● Support the development and integration of Indigenous content and perspectives across the curriculum.
● Support educators in implementing culturally relevant, responsive, and sustaining teaching practices.
● Provide resources and support for the inclusion of Indigenous languages, histories, and cultures in the classroom.
● Build and maintain relationships with local Indigenous communities, organizations, and leaders.
● Facilitate partnerships with Indigenous communities to support student success and well-being.
● Organize and participate in community events, meetings, and cultural activities.
● Collaborate with central team staff to lead professional development opportunities on Indigenous education and cultural competency.
● Research and understand best practices in Indigenous education and share knowledge with staff.
● Provide guidance and support to Indigenous students and their families.● Collaborate with the Indigenous Student Support Advisor and Mental Health and Well-Being Counsellor to address barriers to Indigenous student success.● Collect and analyze data related to Indigenous student achievement and well-being.
● Monitor relevant budgets and ensure compliance with respect to Ministry deliverables,
● Complete Ministry reports and prepare updates for the system, including reports to trustees, Senior Staff and/or to the public;
● Chair the Indigenous Education Advisory Council.
● Travel as required to any school within the system – must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.


Qualifications:

● Extensive knowledge of Indigenous histories, cultures, and perspectives
● Experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations
● Demonstrated effective leadership working with peers and supervisors in school and/or system roles
● Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional learning and reflective practice in the areas of culturally relevant, responsive and sustaining pedagogy and the Calls to Action in the National Truth and Reconciliation report, and the AMDSB Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity Action Plan
● Strong leadership and advocacy skills
● Excellent communication, organizational, time management and interpersonal skills.
● Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
● Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in education.
● Strong understanding of culturally relevant, responsive, and sustaining pedagogy.
● Lived experiences as an Indigenous person● Knowledge of an Indigenous language (e.g., Anishinaabemowin) and/or OCT qualifications in Native Studies Language an asset.
● First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples: Understanding Traditional Teachings, Histories, Current Issues and Cultures - Part 1, 2 or Specialist Additional Qualification The candidate must have regular access to a reliable vehicle as travel throughout the board is required.
