Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Carbon, Energy and Sustainability, the Carbon and Energy Coordinator will support the implementation of the Climate Action Plan (CAP), and related energy management and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction goals and commitments as detailed in various corporate plans and strategies.

The incumbent will be responsible for supporting the integration of carbon and energy efficiency goals into Corporate Services standards, policies and processes and will carry out reporting in order to support the college as a whole.

Working with the Climate Action Plan Implementation Coordinator, the incumbent will develop reports, presentations, business cases, etc. to advise the CAP Steering Group and will collaborate with other departments and internal policyholders, etc. to develop and implement GHG reduction initiatives (, sustainable procurement framework, building standards, travel policies, etc.).

This role involves working closely with various departments, faculty, and students to drive sustainability initiatives and foster a culture of environmental responsibility within the college community.

What you'll be doing:

Data Management

Maintain accurate records of carbon emissions, energy usage, and sustainability-related data. This involves:

Creating and refining data acquisition and reporting processes and tools to support specific sustainability initiatives, objectives and metrics. Utilizing data management software and tools to track and analyze environmental metrics. Assisting with the preparation and submission of annual greenhouse gas reporting required under 507/18. Preparing and submitting other carbon, water, waste, and energy reporting by the Sustainability Office. Collaborates with Energy Specialist to develop reports and presentations to showcase the College’s leadership position as the leader in energy efficiency and carbon reduction. Preparing regular reports and presenting data-driven insights to college leadership and stakeholders. Ensures data integrity and compliance with reporting requirements.

Policy and Program Development

Lead the development and implementation of sustainability policies and programs, ensuring alignment with college objectives and industry best practices. This includes:

Drafting and revising sustainability policies to guide college-wide efforts. Creating and managing sustainability programs that address specific environmental goals. Collaborating with stakeholders to ensure policy compliance and program success. Providing guidance and support to departments and individuals on policy adherence. Support policy and program research, development and implementation of low carbon programs and initiatives. Supports the development and implementation the College’s zero carbon campus roadmap.

Collaboration

Provide coordination, guidance and support to relevant internal stakeholders in creating, documenting, tracking and reporting on their respective Net Zero and climate mitigation initiatives. Collaborate with external stakeholders including the City of Hamilton to improve transportation options and other issues relevant to the CAP. Prepares and presents carbon and sustainability analyses (, carbon accounting, life cycle assessments, energy intensity calculations) to support senior leaders and/or the Facilities Services team make informed decisions about capital investments, equipment purchases, space planning, and other critical decisions.

Compliance

Ensure compliance with relevant environmental regulations, standards, and certifications, such as LEED or Green Building Standards. This involves:

Staying updated on regulatory changes and industry standards related to sustainability and carbon reduction. Collaborating with regulatory bodies and auditors to maintain certifications. Assisting in the preparation of sustainability-related reports required for compliance. Track the effectiveness of the climate action plan and its goals to ensure the College is on track to meet its 2030 and 2035 goals and timelines. Working with the Climate Action Plan Implementation Coordinator, assists in preparation of internal and public facing reports on carbon, energy, and sustainability.

Grant and Funding Opportunities

Develops and implements tools and processes to integrate greenhouse gas (GHG) considerations into planning and operations which includes preparation of funding and grant applications to support low carbon programs and initiatives. Identifies potential sources of funding from government agencies, foundations and private organizations Supports funding proposals for climate mitigation and energy efficiency projects Supports grand-funded projects, ensuring compliance with funding requirements and reporting deadlines

What you'll bring to the role:

4-year degree plus professional certification and/or post graduate degree in sustainability, engineering, environmental or ecosystems management is required. Master’s of Environmental Science (MES), Master of Engineering (Meng) and/or a Master’s of Science (MSc) would be considered an asset Minimum of 3 years of experience in sustainability, carbon reduction, or energy management. Strong knowledge of carbon emissions tracking and reduction strategies. Familiarity with energy conservation practices and technologies. Excellent data analysis and reporting skills. Strong project management and organizational skills. Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders. Knowledge of relevant environmental regulations and standards. Experience with sustainability certifications (, Energy Management, Sustainability Professional, or GHG-V) is a plus. Passion for environmental sustainability and a commitment to promoting green practices. Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
