As part of a major expansion of its research programs, the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-track position .

The Faculty of Education is located on the unceeded ancestral territories of the Algonquin people in the heart of the nation's capital. Title of the position: Indigenous Histories, Perspectives and Contemporary Issues in Educational Research (Teaching in the anglophone programs)

We are seeking applicants who can contribute to the existing research in Indigenous Histories, Perspectives and Contemporary Issues in Educational Research that intersects with areas such as, but not limited to: Indigenous studies, social studies, history education, curriculum studies, cultural studies, Indigenous futurities, treaty education, land-based pedagogies, community-led, oral history and/or arts-based research methodologies, Indigenous spirituality, languages, educational governance, ethical relationality, feminist, two-spirited, queer and/or transgender studies, Indigenous disability studies, Indigenous Teacher Education, and/or Indigenous excellence.

We invite candidates who are committed to strengthening our existing interdisciplinary relations with other faculties (e.g., Social Sciences, Arts, Science, Medicine, Health Science), school boards, and community organizations who seek to enhance the research and educational opportunities specifically for Indigenous communities, their families, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, youth, and children here in Canada and the world.

Preferential Hiring of Indigenous Candidates

The hiring for this position will be done in accordance with the University’s , which seeks to remedy the under-representation of Indigenous faculty members. As a restricted hiring opportunity, and as provided in the provisions for a special program described by the Ontario Human Rights Commission, applicants must demonstrate in their application materials that they are eligible to be included in the category of Indigenous persons and will be asked to complete a confidential questionnaire at the time of submitting an application.

Duties: The functions of a member of the academic faculty include, in varying proportions: a) teaching activities; b) scholarly activities in the form of research, artistic or literacy creation, or professional work; c) academic service activities; d) supervision of graduate students.

Terms: Tenure-track position (Assistant Professor)

Remuneration: Base salary for assistant professors is $89,622 (based on the scale in effect as of May 1, 2023).

Skills requirements:

Education: Ph.D. in Education or equivalent in a field related to the position. Work Experience: A demonstrated excellent track record of research in Indigenous Education in collaboration with Indigenous communities in Canada.A demonstrated ability to teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels in a context of interdisciplinary collaboration.Ability to teach hybrid and on-line courses.Passive knowledge of the other official language in Canada is a requirement for tenure. Proficiency in an Indigenous language is considered an asset for this position. Preference will be given to applicants whose research and teaching praxes reflect an existing and ongoing relationship to legally recognized and inherent Indigenous nations, communities and/or organizations (non-profit, health and wellness, educational sectors, etc.), or artistic and heritage organizations (museums, galleries, theatre, etc.).

A cover letter describing the candidate’s interest in this position, their program of research and teaching interests, a curriculum vitae, a sample of published work, a transcript for each academic degree received, the names and contact information for three referees, a letter of recommendation from a traditional knowledge keeper or community leader/member with whom the candidate has worked attesting the candidate’s experience of teaching and researching Indigenous education in partnership with the community.
