Job Summary

Children and Youth Program Coordinator is responsible for planning and delivering experiential learning programs at the UBC Farm for children and youth, including the FarmWonders spring break and summer camp programs, tours, field trips and workshops for students (K-12) and educators. In collaboration with the Education Manager, the coordinator will develop and implement age-appropriate curriculum and tour content. The coordinator will care for the Children’s Garden and the Children’s Greenhouse sites including installing and running irrigation, planning food cultivation, purchasing and maintaining equipment, as well as overall care and maintenance of these sites. The position has oversight of the Children and Youth Program registration systems, database and budget. The position ensures that all activities conform to University policy, guidelines, procedures and government regulations.


Organizational Status
The position reports to the Education Manager regarding day-to-day activities and priorities. Interacts with faculty members, researchers, staff and students. Liaises regularly with individuals in other University departments as well as a number of external vendors.

Work Performed

  • Assists with planning, leading and evaluating children and youth experiential learning programs.
  • Educates, instructs and supervises children and youth participating in the programs by developing and leading science-based experiments and activities.
  • Provides input into the hiring, mentoring and supervision of program facilitators and staff, mentors, and supervises program facilitators and staff and research and facilitates appropriate training.
  • Maintains the UBC Farm Children's Education Garden beds and greenhouse.
  • Assists program participants with planting and harvesting from garden beds.
  • Plans and delivers children and youth activities for both on-Farm and off-site outreach events.
  • In collaboration with the Communications team, promotes programs and recruit participants.
  • Oversees registration system, databases and program budget.
  • Researches possible funding opportunities and will provide input into the proposals.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position is required to exercise considerable tact, discretion and initiative in the performance of duties. Errors in judgement and poor customer services will result in significant financial and reputational losses. A high level of security and confidentiality is required.

Supervision Received
Works independently under general direction of the Education Manager. Receives detailed instructions from supervisor on the assignment of new duties and thereafter only on new and unusual problems. Technical problems and matters involving policy are referred to supervisors.

Supervision Given
Supervises the work of up to 5 work learn students as well as volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a technical program and a minimum of 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant post-secondary diploma or equivalent experience. Social work, counselling, or teaching degrees an asset.
  • Five years of applied, real world experience in a relevant field working with high school aged youth (e.g. teaching, camp director, program manager) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Program development experience: ability to identify and implement improvements to current programs and curriculum, as well as develop and launch new programs and curriculum.
  • Facilitation and program delivery skills: ability to lead, engage and work with children, youth and adults in various activities.
  • Experience with farming, gardening, and food systems.
  • Knowledge of local and organic agricultural production practices is an asset.
  • Familiarity with and commitment to the vision and mission of the UBC Farm.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills (both written and verbal) with the ability to communicate with the general public with diplomacy and tact as a representative of UBC Farm.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - able to engage with different groups; develop and grow strategic relationships. Able to work both independently and within a dynamic team environment; able to resolve interpersonal conflicts professionally.
  • Demonstrated Supervisory skills - managing a team of up to 5 team members.
  • Self-motivated, highly adaptable, able to identify and prioritize tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work quickly, efficiently and calmly in a busy environment, in any weather and bring tasks to completion on time.
  • Computer skills at an intermediate level (i.e. MS Office) is required; experience with online registration systems an asset.
  • First Aid Level 1 (or willingness to attain) is required.
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Record check
  • Must be in good physical shape – able to lift 50 lbs.
