Parkland School Division (PSD) has a unique Family Community Liaison Advisor opportunity that allows you to join our division and get to work, live and play in the close-knit rural community of Fort Chipewyan, Alberta, at the Athabasca Delta Community School (K-10). This is a unique opportunity to belong to this northern community while being a part of an urban/rural school division in the greater Edmonton area.

The Division is assuming operation of Athabasca Delta Community School and is seeking a Family Community Liaison Advisor who will be part of the team and will support student and well-being.

About Fort Chipewyan

Sitting at the northwest tip of Lake Athabasca, Fort Chipewyan is one of the most northern communities in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, one that strives for a balance between urban and natural settings in Treaty 8 Territory. There are about 980 residents living in the hamlet, making it the second-largest community in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. Many of the residents of Fort Chipewyan are Mikisew Cree First Nation, Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, and Fort Chipewyan Métis. Surrounded by nature, Fort Chipewyan is a fly in community. We are inviting candidates to apply to be a Temporary Part-time (0.923 FTE) Family Community Liaison Advisor in Parkland School Division serving Athabasca Delta Community School (K-10) located in Fort Chipewyan, Alberta. This position will be temporary and therefore will not include benefits or leave entitlements.

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the school Principal, the Family Community Liaison Advisor assists Athabasca Delta Community School (ADCS) students through academic, social and emotional/behavioral supports designed primarily to ensure their success in school and related activities. You will partner with school staff, parents, and community to help build student attendance and readiness to learn, promotes a positive, safe and nurturing learning environment for all students.

Typical Duties:

Provide a variety of supports to students which include the following: Welcome students and their families to the school and school events. In partnership with school and Division staff, meet with parents, families and community leaders. Participate in the development, monitoring, and reporting of goals related to student success, as reflected in the school’s Education Plan. Develop strategies to help school staff contact with parents and families. Facilitate parent attendance at school events and parent-teacher conferences. Establish a relationship of trust and respect with students. Meet with individual students and groups of students regularly to discuss their progress, challenges and transition future success Assist and talk with students for appropriate course selection. Facilitate problem solving with students in cooperation with other students, school staff and administration. Guide staff about the student’s unique qualities of their cultural heritage. Assist in developing programs to meet unique student needs which may not be provided through existing programs. In partnership with school staff and the community, foster awareness of indigenous culture within the school and its community and work with other Liaisons to promote a team approach to meeting the needs of students, their families and the school staff. Maintain accurate contact notes and relevant information regarding students beyond the report card. Perform other duties as assigned to support students.

Knowledge and Skills:

This position requires a minimum of high school diploma and/or equivalency, supplemented with post-secondary coursework, preferably including Aboriginal studies, or equivalent experience. Experience working with indigenous people is a definite asset.

The position requires a strong ability to work independently and also as a positive team member. Liaisons must exhibit flexibility, cooperation and dependability combined with high levels of oral communication, client service orientation and interpersonal skills.
