Housing First Outreach Worker

The Northern Alberta YMCA is looking for someone to join the Community team as a Housing Outreach Worker (HOW). The successful candidate will be experienced in supporting individuals, couples and families who are chronically or episodically homeless with multiple barriers and high needs.

Position Responsibilities

The HOW completes intake screening evaluations and documentations, similar to a real estate agent: must be familiar with Residential Tenancy Act and Edmonton listings for affordable housing, liaison between landlord and tenant participant during viewings and leasing market housing units (signing lease, household and furniture setup), providing professional opinion for participants and help them find new home opportunities in the Edmonton communities, provide expertise on the housing market and guidance on budgets or listing prices.  The HOW ensures participants are moved in and set up in safe, affordable, suitable and sustainable housing.  The HOW operates within the Housing First Philosophy, where everyone has a right to shelter, regardless of their barriers.  The HOW will demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills with vulnerable populations who face housing insecurity and related challenges.  As required, the HOW will search and work with public stakeholders and landlords in order to provide affordable housing for participants. The Housing Outreach Worker carries out his or her duties in a professional manner and in accordance with all YMCA policies and procedures, standards of conduct and practice, health and safety standards, child protection standards and contractual, legal and regulatory requirements. 

What you will need for This Job: 

University Degree in a Human Services or a related field.  2 years’ experience working directly with vulnerable populations. Standard First Aid and CPR, Child Welfare & Police Security Clearance with vulnerable sector check  Annual registration in a professional organization as required by law if applicable. WHMIS Certification preferred/completed during new hire onboarding.  Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and Suicide Intervention Certification preferred.  Valid driver’s license, clear driver’s abstract, and access to a vehicle.  Experience and knowledge of cultural groups, high needs and marginalized populations. Experience working in a team environment.
