Are you energetic, collaborative, creative and have a passion for working with youth? Do you have an understanding of challenges that prevent LGBTQ2S+ youth from seeking safe and inclusive spaces and want to become their best advocates in obtaining inclusive support?

As a Youth Worker you will support LGBTQ2S+ youth between the ages of 16-24 to obtain short term, community based accommodations with the intention of planning for transition to stable, permanent housing. You will develop and nurture relations with communities, landlords, stakeholders; foster positive community supports, facilitate group activities, and provide referrals for follow-up supports to external service.

What you bring to the team You bring 2+ years’ experience working with marginalized populations (LGBTQ2S+, youth, and Indigenous populations is an asset). You possess a diploma in Gender Studies, Child and Youth Care (CYC), Social Work, or a related field. You bring working knowledge and understanding of LGBTQ2S+ experiences and can embed in your work the practices of harm reduction, person-centered, trauma-informed, and strength-based care. You are calm, collected, and know what to do whether it is a crisis situation or an opportunity to provide one-on-one support. You are able to understand and respond to multiple, complex barriers faced by high-risk youth. You have the ability to travel to different sites as required using a personal vehicle. Facilitate case assessment and case management sessions with youth helping to create long term stability.

Support youth in developing the life skills and goals required for a successful transition into adulthood. Provide crisis intervention and one-to-one support to youth in the community. Work with youth, families, service teams, landlords, and community members to assist in developing positive relationships. Attend meetings and activities with youth in the community including one-on-one work with youth in their apartments/suites. Ensure youth have clean, safe, and healthy living environments.

Education and Certifications

Required

Degree or Diploma in Child and Youth Care (CYC), Social Work, Human Services, or related field Clear Police Check with Vulnerable Sector Clear Intervention Record Check Reliable, registered vehicle, driver’s license, a recent 5-year driver’s abstract and valid insurance including two-million-dollar liability coverage. Standard First Aid Indigenous Awareness Medication Administration De-Escalation Protection of Sexually Exploited Children’s Act Suicide Intervention Harm Reduction Food Safety WHMIS

Experience

3 years’ experience working with marginalized populations (youth experience is an asset). Strong interpersonal, non-judgmental, empathetic, flexible and ability to work with initiative.

Extensive background and experience working with youth struggling with substance use/addictions, poverty, mental health, traumatic histories, LGBTQ2S+, and Newcomers to Canada and/or refugees. Understanding and ability to respond to multiple, complex barriers faced by youth. Working knowledge and experience with harm reduction, resiliency, trauma-informed and solution focused practice. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Proficient in MS Outlook, WORD, Excel, database applications and computer operation.
