Course title: Forensic Accounting & Investigation, Fraud & Cybercrime (IFA 1900H)

Class schedule: Online sessions will typically be scheduled on Tuesdays from 19:00-22:00 EST/EDT

Dates of appointment: September 1 – October 31, 2024

Description of course:

This course presents a set of foundational topics that will underpin the rest of the MFAcc Program. It will begin with an overview of the Program, and of the topics in the title, which will be followed by an examination of various aspects of fraud such as legal issues, types and classifications, a structured approach to financial investigations, and specific types of fraud including: financial statement and other investor frauds, and accounting and procurement frauds. Fraud prevention will be introduced. The course will then introduce and consider loss quantification including types of claims, damage estimations, and an overview of the related litigation process. Cybercrime will be introduced, as will the risks and issues it represents. The course will conclude with consideration of the role of forensic accountants as experts, and challenges involved.

IFA 1900H will be taught online in 8, once-per-week, interactive sessions, 3 hours in length, followed by an invigilated examination in the 9th week. There will also be an individual assignment and a group assignment.

The role of the secondary instructors will be to develop and teach classes on their area of expertise.

Minimum qualifications: Preferred qualifications are either PhD in relevant discipline (completed) or for non University of Toronto graduate students, in progress, or relevant qualifications, professional designation or professional experience. We are seeking previous experience in teaching, teaching excellence, and mastery of subject area. Previous experience in teaching a similar course is highly desirable.

Salary: $17,267.74 for the course, however divided accordingly between the Instructor & Secondary Instructors

Anticipated enrolment: 20-25

Minimum TA support: 45 hrs
