Course description

Students will learn about fundamental grammatical concepts, focusing on the major grammatical categories in English and how they interact at the phrase level. They will be introduced to the main constituents of English sentences and learn about the basic relationship between tense, aspect, and modality. Students will learn to apply this knowledge as a tool to think analytically about English, evaluating various registers and styles, and gaining an awareness of their own style of speaking and writing. 

Number of positions: 2

Estimated course enrolment: 250 each section

Salary:
Sessional Lecturer I - $9,457.90 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer I Long Term - $9,930.79 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer II - $10,121.77 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer II Long Term - $10,326.62 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer III - $10,362.76 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Sessional Lecturer III Long Term - $10,570.02 inclusive of vacation pay (0.5 FCE)

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:

Ph.D. in Linguistics or a related field is required.

Mastery of subject material (English syntax from a theoretical linguistic perspective), with a background in theoretical linguistics is required.

Demonstrated excellence and experience teaching university-level Linguistics courses is required.

Preferred qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants with ongoing linguistic research related to the subject area and with experience teaching the same, or a similar, course in Linguistics.

Experience in course management through Quercus/Canvas is also preferred.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II and Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12.
