Position Description

Reporting directly to the Manager, Pre-Clinical Research, and working closely with the Facility Veterinarian and Animal Care Committee Chair, the successful applicant will oversee CAMH standards for researchers working with animals and ensure that researchers work within the legislative framework provided by the Ontario Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) as well as the federal guidelines published by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC). The ideal candidate for this position will be responsible for overseeing the functioning of the Animal Care Committee (ACC), animal use protocol submission and review, post approval monitoring program, crisis management program, training program oversight and documentation, policy development and maintaining standard operating procedures governing best practices. The individual will support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable CAMH policies, as well as all regulatory and legislative requirements. This position is located at 250 College St.

Qualifications The Animal Research Ethics Specialist must have a Bachelor degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and experience and must be registered as a Laboratory Animal Technician (or be eligible to register). 2 years’ experience working in a laboratory animal setting is required. The incumbent must have thorough knowledge of the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) policies and guidelines, and Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) legislation (Animals for Research Act). Experience serving on an Animal Care Committee is an asset. A thorough understanding of processes surrounding the completion and review of animal use protocols is preferred. Candidates should possess the ability for self-directed learning/working; with the ability to work concurrently on multiple projects. Excellent documentation practices are required. Computer literacy (competency in Outlook and Microsoft Word) including working with and creating databases is required. Professional, collegial relationships with team members, stakeholders and facility users must be maintained. Candidates are expected to be motivated, reliable, detail-oriented, well organized. Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment and tact are required. Ability to train and guide colleagues and facility users while maintaining a cooperative, collaborative working environment is required.
