Types of Appointments 

Following are the types of appointments for which candidates may apply: 

a full workload sessional appointment, normally for thirty (30) total semester hours over two (2) successive semesters; a full workload half sessional appointment, normally for fifteen (15) semester hours in any one (1) semester; a reduced workload sessional appointment, for at least nine (9) but less than fifteen (15) semester hours in each of two (2) successive semesters; a reduced workload half sessional appointment, for at least nine (9) but less than fifteen (15) semester hours in any one (1) semester; a part-time hourly appointment/two (2) semesters, for less than nine (9) semester hours in each of two (2) successive semesters; a part-time hourly appointment/one (1) semester, for less than nine (9) semester hours in any one (1) semester; a multi-term appointment consisting of any appointment type listed in 1. (a) to (f) above for more than one (1) academic year.

PLEASE NOTE:  Pursuant to the University's  and as a condition of employment, all successful candidates will be required to either submit valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or receive a Course delivery in Winter 2023 will be online, in-person or hybrid at the sole discretion of the hiring unit. Candidates hired for in-person courses will be required to carry out their teaching on campus. Candidates teaching remotely are required to have access to the appropriate technology, i.e. computer with camera and microphone and high-speed internet.

Selection Criteria Weightings

Education: The level of relevant academic degrees including credentials and professional designations, as applicable; and/or degrees typically held by a teacher in that discipline/profession in the university sector; Experience: In addition to demonstrating the extent and variety of relevant work and/or community experience in the professional field or discipline, an applicant must also demonstrate the extent of university teaching experience and previous experience teaching the same or an equivalent course at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson) or an equivalent course at another university; Currency: Candidates must demonstrate evidence of having maintained up-to-date knowledge (including practice skills, where appropriate) in a specific field/discipline, and/or demonstrate evidence of having maintained academic currency in the specific field/discipline relevant to the course(s) for which the candidate has applied which may include publication in a peer-reviewed journal, presentation or attendance at relevant academic conferences, and/or attendance/participation in teaching-related conferences, workshops, seminars, etc.; currency can be conveyed in a portfolio or linked to a website.  Teaching Skills: Teaching skills may be evaluated using tools such as Contract Lecturer Assessment forms and Faculty Course Survey results or equivalent documentation; in addition, experience and skills with incorporating critical pedagogy and materials that provide different themes of knowledge, perspectives, lived experiences and worldviews as demonstrated in lectures, presentations, etc. 

While applicants may submit Faculty/Course Survey results from Winter 2020, Spring/Summer 2020, Fall 2020, Winter 2021, Fall 2021, and Winter 2022 these results will not be used as evidence of teaching effectiveness by the Contract Lecturer Appointment Committee due to the impact of COVID-19 on these semesters. A negative inference will not be drawn if FCS results are not submitted for these semesters. Alternate evidence of teaching effectiveness may be provided by the candidate for consideration by the CLAC. 

Interactive Skills: Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with colleagues and students; ability to work effectively in groups; ability to resolve conflicts constructively; ability to carry out the duties and obligations of a Contract Lecturer in a respectful manner; ability to empathize with others and consider varied perspectives, including the ability to support a diverse student population and create an equitable, diverse and inclusive atmosphere for students.

Scoring Formats Total possible score 160 points (100 points in Scorings A, B and C)

Education Scoring: the level of relevant academic degrees including credentials and professional designations, as applicable; and/or degrees typically held by a teacher in that discipline/profession in the university sector.

Education points may be awarded for the highest professional degree (CIDA or CACB accredited, or equivalent from a foreign jurisdiction)


Additional degrees, certificates, or diplomas received beyond the professional degree, including post-professional Master's degrees, PhDs., etc.

Design-related PhD, 5 points

Design-related Masters (including M.Arch. following BID)3 points

Other PhD,2 points

Professional memberships and certifications, including 

Experience Scoring: the extent and variety of relevant work and/or community experience in the professional field or discipline; the extent of University teaching experience; previous experience teaching the same or an equivalent course at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson) or an equivalent course at another University.

Experience points may be awarded for professional design experience with a specific focus on how this experience prepares the applicant to teach the specific courses or packages they are applying for. This may include 

the duration of the experience,  the type of practice, with Interior Design practices (ARIDO) scoring highest; the level of recognition of the practice,  the level of the position within the practice,  awards and citations, especially for Interior Design work; professional exhibitions and publications, especially of Interior Design work; as well as service to the profession in terms of juries, curatorial experience, and so on. 

(Note: for scorings A and B, applicants whose experience is primarily outside of interior design, for example, in architecture or public art, should not score higher than 15 on this criterion. 

Examples

The applicant is a principal in a successful Interior Design firm that has won numerous awards and has an international reputation; the candidate is active within the profession. - 25 points. The applicant has ten years of Interior Design experience within a large multi-disciplinary architecture and design firm and has worked on many large projects, some of which have won industry awards. - 20-25 points. The Applicant has recently opened a new Interior Design office after ten years working in an important ID firm. The applicant has won some major recognition, the new firm is generating a buzz, and the applicant is active in the design community. - 18-23 points. The applicant is the owner of a sole proprietorship that has a reputation for doing fine ID design work but has not been widely recognized through awards etc. - 15-20 points. The applicant has five to ten years of progressive experience in a well-considered ID firm or doing ID projects in an architecture firm. - 10-15 points. The applicant is a principal in an Architecture firm doing award-winning architectural or public art projects. - 10-15 points. The applicant is a recent graduate with less than 3 years of experience but is well thought of in their ID firm and has recently won an ideas competition. - 5-10 points.

Professional or volunteer experience with social innovation or in the service of equity-seeking groups; in the area of sustainable design; and/or in the area of emerging technologies in the design discipline.

Teaching experience, at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson) or elsewhere, with a specific focus on how this experience prepares the applicant to teach the specific courses or packages they are applying for.

Currency Scoring: demonstrated evidence of having maintained up-to-date knowledge (including practice skills, where appropriate) in their specific field/discipline, and/or demonstrated evidence of having maintained academic currency in the specific field/discipline relevant to the course (s) for which the candidate has applied which may include publication in a peer-reviewed journal, presentation or attendance at relevant academic conferences; attendance/participation in teaching-related conferences (e.g. Toronto Metropolitan University, Learning and Teaching Conference), workshops, seminars, etc.

Points may be awarded for: 

How the applicant maintained up-to-date knowledge and skills related to this course or package for which they are applying. The applicant’s recent engagement with emerging design technologies, such as digital fabrication, material science, environmental simulation, or similar technology and software-based areas; the applicant’s recent engagement with and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, as well as their activities related to social innovation.; and/or the applicant’s recent engagement with the principles and practice of sustainable design, including any certification they have received as a practitioner of sustainable design.  Recent awards, publications, exhibitions and speaking engagements, presentations or attendance at relevant academic or professional conferences. Recent teaching conferences, workshops or seminars the applicant has attended, as well as publications or conference presentations they have made relating to teaching. 

Teaching Skills Scoring: Ability to teach effectively which may include such tools as Contract Lecturer Assessment forms and Faculty Course Survey results or equivalent documentation;

Points may be awarded for:

The applicant’s stated teaching philosophy. The incorporation of critical pedagogy and materials in the applicant’s teaching, to enable different knowledge, perspectives, lived experiences and worldviews. Teaching awards, prizes, nominations or mentions the applicant has received; any other evidence related to the applicant’s teaching practice, such as student evaluations. 

Interactive Skills Scoring: Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with colleagues and students; ability to work effectively in groups; ability to resolve conflicts constructively; ability to carry out the duties and obligations of a Contract Lecturer in a respectful manner; ability to empathize with others and consider varied perspectives.

Points may be awarded for:

Soft skills as articulated in the application.  Participation in the life of the School: Student groups, committees, development of practices and/or systems; Regular and consistent attendance at departmental meetings; Participating in school and/or industry-related extracurricular activities.
