Position Summary:

Reportingto the Senior Manager, Black Futures, the Black Futures Coordinator supportsBlack community engagement and inclusion. The Coordinator supports thedevelopment and implementation of initiatives to support George Brown’sstrategies and commitments to address anti-Black racism by providing strategicsupport, using an anti-Black racism framework and working towards fulfillingthe principles, actions, and accountabilities of the Scarborough Charter.

Key responsibilities:

Oversees day-to-day operations of the Gathering space, including the oversight of the drop-in components ( Computers, study space, and lounge, etc.), in compliance with GBC policies and procedures. Tracks gathering space usage and data for annual report submission.
Leads, plans, and develops college-wide Black Futures Initiative programming, special projects, as well as events for the GBC community that enhance community engagement, belonging and well-being independently and in collaboration with college departments and academic centres.
Actively represents the goals and objectives of Black Futures Initiatives and the GBC Black community on relevant committees, including but not limited to scholarship selection, equitable recruitment, and admissions committees.
Acts as first point of contact for faculty and staff interested in engaging with the office (responding to emails, in person inquiries), and in consultation with senior staff, sets standards for the quality of department services.
Provides resources, education, and support to help raise awareness around anti-Black racism and anti-racism.
Works collaboratively with the Sr. Manager Black Futures to develop strategic partnerships with internal stakeholders and when appropriate with external bodies (organizations/ programs within the greater Black community) to recruit, cultivate contact and foster ongoing positive relationships with George Brown College.
Develops, delivers, and assesses educational and social programming strategies responsive to the needs of the college’s diverse Black population that demonstrate an understanding of Black flourishing in areas of access, wellness, transition, and success.
Develops intersectional programming, by cultivating partnerships and collaborating with other relevant unit and departments such as mental health, queerness, disability, and gender identity/expression.
Provide advocacy and liaise with relevant units and departments across campus including those specializing in mental health, LGBTQ+ support, disability services, gender identity/expression, and assistance for international students to determine the most effective strategies for addressing the unique intersectional identities.
Collects and monitors statistics and other metrics as related to programming, events as required.
Other duties as assigned.

Educational andExperience Requirements:

Four-year degree or equivalent from a recognized post-secondary institution in Social Work, Equity Studies, Black Studies, Adult Education, or equivalent/related field is required.
Minimum five (5) years of experience developing programming for staff and students u, preferably in a post-secondary setting.
Proven experience providing, mentorship and support to students at varying stages of their academic life cycle.
Demonstrated experience with trauma-informed program development, implementation, and evaluation.
Demonstrated experience conducting public presentations in post-secondary or complex multi-stakeholder environments.
Demonstrable lived experience as a Black person related to the role.
Requires deep commitment and experience social justice and/or community-based work that forwards the success of Black communities, with the knowledge and ability to apply AR/AO (anti-racism and anti oppression) principles in everyday work and engagements.

Skills and Attributes:

Ability to demonstrate sufficient understanding of history, values, culture, and contemporary contexts relevant to individuals of African, Caribbean, and Canadian ancestry, as well as the broader Black diaspora. Ability to articulate complexity and nuances of social equity issues, systemic barrier, and social disparities through superior interpersonal communication skills – written, verbal, video, presentations.
Intermediate knowledge of standard office computer applications and the development of digital assets (such as Canva, PowerPoint, Blackboard Ultra, social media Instagram).
Excellent project management skills, principles, and practices.
Demonstrated understanding of intersectionality, complexities of social equity issues, Universal Design and working within an anti-racism/anti-oppressive framework which includes web-enhanced, hybrid, and mobile technologies.
Demonstrated commitment to uphold the College’s priorities on anti-racism equity diversity, inclusion, and indigenization.
Ability to build positive relationships with diverse communities as well as collaborate with others to identify systemic issues in the college.
Awareness of legislation, including Human Rights Code, AODA, OHSA and experience working within a post-secondary institution is an asset.
Able to lift between 20 kg or 44 lbs (, carry resources, move furniture, etc.).
