The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.

Position title: Hatch Art Gallery Coordinator

Reports to:Vice President, Administration

Supervises:Hatch Volunteers

Employee status: Hourly Exempt, Appointed

Length of term: until April 30, 2025

Hours per week:20

Compensation: $18.00 per hour 

Position Purpose

The Art Gallery Coordinatoris responsible for managing and maintaining the Hatch Art Gallery, along with the policies related to it and the AMS Permanent Collection. In addition, they will provide leadership and direction for the marketing of the Hatch Art Gallery, along with any renovations, grant applications, and new initiatives that are coming up.

The Art Gallery Coordinator supervises Hatch Volunteers.They are also responsible for handling the scheduling of exhibitions and shows in the Hatch Art Gallery for the following year and ensuring the installations and preparations for any events or shows occurring in the space are done properly.

Duties and Responsibilities

Maintain the Permanent Art Collection of the Society Recommend new acquisitions for the Permanent Collection Explore ways to loan out the Permanent Art Collection Maintain the Gallery’s web page on the AMS website and other online services related to the gallery Maintain and organize the database of the Permanent Art Collection Organize biannual shows of pieces of the Permanent Art Collection Develop special, short- and long-term goals to aid in the growth of the Gallery as an exceptional resource to the Arts community and UBC campus Receive and review applications for student art shows Schedule and curate student art shows and act as the AMS contact person for the organizer and record the number of visitors for each show Curate additional shows of interest and relevance to the Hatch Art Gallery’s mandate Interview, hire, manage and schedule regular volunteers for the Art Gallery throughout the year Promote and market the AMS Hatch Art Gallery and its exhibitions over the year both on campus and in Vancouver Develop and maintain relationships with the Department of Art History and Visual Arts and UBC artists Maintain office and tools/storage space Attend Operations Committee meetings as needed and present report on activities Prepare transition report for successor Works with the AMS mission statement and values to operate a successful department Other duties as required

Qualifications and Experience

Must be a currently registered student at UBC Vancouver or one of its affiliated colleges, preferably a student in the Department of Art History, Visual Arts and Theory May not be an executive of an AMS club, constituency or resource group A strong Interest in the Visual/Aural/Performance Arts A sincere interest in developing creative means of engaging the public and providing opportunities for dialogue through exhibition and other kinds of programming The ability to perform installations of different exhibitions and art shows Comfortable working within an anti-oppression framework to create a positive space for everyone Strong organizational skills; detail-oriented Strong interpersonal and communication skills Leadership skills
