Why is this role important?

The Senior Analyst plays a key role in organizing and leveraging the pan-Canadian data CIHI holds. This involves data management, developing and maintaining data and information standards (e.g., methodologies, indicators, and statistics), preparing relevant documentation, providing client support, assessing data quality, producing statistics, fulfilling custom data requests, conducting analysis and contributing to analytical reports. Participates in department/branch projects and initiatives, as well as other meetings and special projects as required. You will be a part of the Population Health team that provides health systems with data and information to advance equity in healthcare across the continuum of care.

** This posting may be used to fill multiple Senior Analyst contract positions, across functions within the branch.

What you'll do

1. Develops and produces analytical products. This includes identifying data sources, supporting the development of appropriate methodologies, and conducting analysis on a broad range of data types (e.g., administrative and survey data, qualitative data).

2. Develops and delivers stakeholder engagement materials (e.g., presentations), including identifying relevant discussion topics and questions, as well as methods for collecting feedback (e.g., surveys, interviews).

3. Interprets and writes analytical results for reports, prepares figures (e.g., tables, graphs, infographics), presentations, briefing notes, and other formats as required.

4. Works within CIHI’s quality assurance guidelines and contributes to producing high quality and comprehensive documentation.

5. Identifies credible and objective evidence, data resources and analytic requirements for scoping new projects. Critically assesses published literature and consults with internal and external stakeholders to determine relevance and feasibility.

6. Delivers presentations and represents Population Health-CIHI internally and externally as required (e.g. workshops, meetings, conferences, committees).

7. Participates in internal and external projects and activities as required.

8. Provides mentoring and training to analysts and Population Health staff.

9. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of health priorities and data sources, including analyses, indicators, data standards, methodologies, and emerging issues related to population health, health equity and health system performance.

What you'll bring to the table

• Undergraduate degree in population health, epidemiology, public health, health studies, community health, bioinformatics, health economics or related field. Graduate degree an asset.

• Three to five years of experience working in a health organization (e.g. federal, provincial, or territorial government, health region, hospital, community health centre, quality council, research institute, public health unit) that actively uses health data and information to measure, monitor, and improve health and health care.

• Experience with the Canadian health system, health system performance indicators, health inequalities measurement, health equity, the determinants of health, and the use of health system information for planning, management, and improvement purposes.

• Strong conceptual, analytical, and problem-solving skills and the ability to conceptualize research questions and develop analysis plans.

• Experience manipulating and analyzing large data sets is a requirement. Familiarity with CIHI databases (e.g. DAD, NACRS, NPDUIS, MIS Costing) and Statistics Canada data (e.g., CCHS) holdings is an asset.

• Experience conducting analyses using statistical software in R is a requirement. Experience with SAS or Python is an asset.

• Substantive experience engaging with stakeholders and advisors through project ideation, development, production, and knowledge translation.

• Knowledge of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed research methods.

• Strong written communication skills with experience interpreting and writing results of analysis and synthesizing research and technical information (e.g. statistical and descriptive reports).

• Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills.

• Strong project coordination skills and experience with mentoring and leading others.

• Advanced experience working with MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

• Experience with reference management software.

• Ability to work effectively both autonomously and collaboratively as a part of a team within a matrix environment.

• Fluency in both official languages is an asset.
