ROLE 

The Communication Disorders Assistant is a trained support personnel that supports the delivery of speech language pathology services under the supervision of a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) registered with The College of Speech Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO). The role of the CDA will be in keeping with best practice position statements and guidelines including “Use of Support Personnel by Speech Language Pathologists” from the College of Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists of Ontario (2014 and “Supportive Personnel Guidelines: Working with Speech-Language Pathologists” from Speech and Audiology Canada (SAC). Tasks that may be assigned to the CDA by the SLP to support service delivery as per these guidelines may include;

  • Conducting speech-language pathology screenings.
  • Gathering information as directed by the SLP.
  • Delivering direct treatment, remediation or education programs to patients as directed by the SLP.
  • Documenting patient progress toward meeting goals with a treatment plan as assigned by the SLP.
  • Performing indirect and non-patient care activities including preparation of materials, booking appointments, ordering supplies, collecting statistics and data entry.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION(S) 

  • Minimum graduate of community college Communication Disorders Assistant (CDA) program.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE(S)

  • Minimum of 2-3 years hospital experience with hospital/adult patients.
  • Experience in working within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to work independently with supervision.
  • Familiarity with stroke populations, the elderly, as well as low tech augmentative communication devices. 

 

DESIRED EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION(S) 

  • Current registration in good standing with
    • Communication Disabilities Access Canada (CDAC).
    • Ontario Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists. (OSLA).
    • Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC).
  • CPR, First Aid

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 

Location: Huntsville District Memorial Hospital (HDMH) located in Huntsville.

Department: Rehabilitation Services. 

Hours of Work: Must be available to work shifts including days, evenings, nights and weekends. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements per the collective agreement. 

Conditions of employment for external hires includes;

  • Proof of immunization and vaccination records to the Hospital’s Occupational Health and Safety department.  
  • Legal entitlement to work in Canada.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record & Judicial Matters Check.
